I almost forgot to post this! I was working on the blog for the MCAD Continuing Studies class (the project driving the design for this bookcase). I will come back and edit the entry with the rationale behind the design.

My Design ProcessFor this contest, I wanted to design an Arts and crafts style bookcase with some unique features. When designing a new piece of furniture, I prefer to start from the intended uses of the piece, any requirements for the dimensions, and any preferences for the style. In this case, the primary requirement was that the bookcase be “one of a kind”.
Based on this, I developed my own short list of requirements for the piece as follows:1. The bookcase must offer a s...

The following is my entry into the bookcase design contest.
Several weeks ago a potential client approached me with an unusual problem. She wanted a bookcase for her new condo. Not unusual except that it needed to be wall mounted, could have NO back, and needed to match the color of her current cabinents. That’s correct, wall mounted with no backing, an open bookcase. Apparently, several other contractors looked at it and told her it was impossible or made excuses as to what coul...

I wanted to design a bookcase that would be a bit of a challenge to build, but not out of the range of the average hobbiest woodworker. I incorporated the turnings in the design to breakup the right angles and give it a greek revival look. The height is just over 5’ and the width is 3 ½ ‘ . I invision this piece being made out of either Cherry or Mohagany with a darker stain and a high gloss top coat. For some reason I was unable to make a dxf of my design, so I included an edrawing versio...

When I first read about this challenge I thought it would be a good reason to finally try to learn SketchUp. I find bookcases as boring as anything as a design study. A quick look at one of my favorite design sites revealed that at www.danish-furniture.com there where no bookcases at all. Not even a small one. It isn’t difficult to understand why. A bookcase is nothing but a collection of shelves connected by some kind of structure. Plain or ornate. The more ornate, the less efficient i...

The design of this entry in the Challenge04 contest is based on a bookshelf I build for my son ( you can see the project here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3968 )
This design and the actual bookshelf I build for my son try to address a number of things I do not like about most bookshelves I see in stores, the web, this site, etc.
1. Non Boxy I do not particularly (or at all) like bookshelves that are boxy. A completely enclosed bookshelf traps the items inside and makes them out of r...

This bookcase I build for each of my kids when they went to college. The first one about 10 years ago. The purpose was to have something that will be flexible in space, easy to move from place to place and sturdy enough to hold books, stereo or a TV, and to last a few years. The supports are made of 3/4” white oak from left over wood floors. The frames are a basic stile and rail construction using pocket holes . This one is 48” high and there are 4 panels joined to each other with hinges. Whe...

For some two years, I carried a rough outline of a case for my wife’s piano books in the back of my mind. Having been scared away by AutoCad’s threat to my credit card balance, and then frustrated with TurboCad’s coming-through-the-back-door work method, I decided to bite the bullet and try Sketchup. Otherwise, I’m back to my old CrayolaCAD.
Well, Sketchup was a little tricky at first, but I managed to fudge a little here and bump a little there, and finally with one cathartic brain fart, ...

I’m very new to Sketchup and I’ve had more trouble than most learning how to do anything useful with it. Just in the last two days I made major progress. I’ll probably do a separate forum or blog post to discuss my trials and tribulations with SketchUp.
For the project, I wanted something light and airy. I think this bookcase has the lightness I wanted yet sturdy. The weight of the bookcase rests on a base so that there is no weight on the curved ends of the side rail...

Hello all,
Found my way here from Popular Woodworking editor’s blog. Nice place you got here.
This is my entry for the Popular Woodworking bookcase contest. It is also my first Sketchup project. The shelf is the foundation of several variations I’d like to do (formal\classical, Asian). I’m still learning Sketchup, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to get pictures of those up before the deadline.
A couple of pictures:
And here's a link to the ...
