I’m working at making something of a couple damaged and mismatched sections of barrister bookcase. The two sections are basically surplus from the “good” cases I have. These didn’t fit, one section was badly fire damaged and oddly repaired at one point. I thought I could make it a little better and more useful.
This picture shows the fire damaged section, the side had been planed down in an uneven taper, about 1/4 inch or more was taken out of the original oak. ...

I have the bookcase built for the murphy bed. They went together fairly quickly. I made a jig that acts as a square for the shelves. It also keeps the shelves from moving when the pocket screws at put in. Here is a picture of the jig. I have it notched out for an overhang I usually put on the top.
I usually attach all shelves on one side and then flip it over and repeat. With the jig it also keeps glue from getting everywhere when I flip it.
Here is the assemble footage
Here are ...

I’ve started on a king size murphy bed. King is not one of the “standard” sizes. As in standard I mean there is no plans for this size. One of the problems with the king is the weight. Most of my murphy beds are perfectly counter-balanced. To help gain mechanical leverage I moved the position of the piston mounting plates. I could only move it 5/8” back. That may not seem like much but when the original distance of the pistons are 7 ½” from the pivot point, that’s about an 8% increas...

Here are the two designs for the bunk beds. I’ll eventually build 3 of one style and 4 of the other. The first on has a headboard similar to the single prototype that I built. The only difference is there is no fixed shelf at the top. I made it adjustable because of headroom. I also put an adjustable shelf at the bottom also.
The second one is a bookcase design. I tried to keep the same style. I lowered the height of the headboard and built a couple bookcases for each level....

I’ve been working on a big Stickley designed double bookcase for way too long, but I’m closing in on it now. Finally put the tongue-and-groove back boards on, all the shelves are done (middle shelves are fixed, top and bottom shelves adjustable … it was too tall for me to get a full top to bottom shot, so you can’t see all the shelves in this pic), it’s all glued up and ready for some final sanding. It’s coming out fairly well, if I do say so myself. But it&...

Well I was able to work much of the day yesterday and today on my desk. Yesterday got stuff cut down and prepared for assembly. did some part sanding. I decided to use miter cuts for the legs similiar to my assembly tables in my shop. I like the look better then butt joints. To cut the miters I used a great miter jig I picked up at a yardsale last year for $5, best dang $5 I have spent in a long time.
Of course like almost all of my projects I used the Kreg Jig. I do like it maybe a li...

Some of you may have seen previous posts about my office and basement. It is now finished off mostly, still needs some trim work and a ceiling but that is an expense we decided to wait on right now. But anywho, this blog series is about me building my office furniture. I decided that I needed a decent desk with hutch and some bookcases to start in order to house my good size collection of books. Due to cost constraints I have decided to attempt to build the office suite of dimensioned pine fr...

Apparently, my dear old Mom is more impatient than I am! Why do I say this? Simple. We both happen to be off today, and she announces to me this morning that she’d like for us to go a pick up the Poplar for her bookcase this morning. I figured it makes a certain amount of sense, considering the wood needs to dry out a bit before being worked, despite coming from Lowe’s. There was just one little problem with this…I hadn’t designed it yet!
So, this will be inter...

As it seems with every project, there are always set-backs. I was nearly finished except for the bottom doors when I ran out of stain. The paint store that custom-mixed the stain is 35 miles away so I decided to experiment with dye.
Well, not on the bookcase, but on my hair. Do you like the results? When I finally got the stain and finished the doors, I had only three hinges for the bottom doors. The top doors were made with an additional ¼” added to make the doors 1” thick wh...
