Now that we have our lid fitted to the box,we are ready to move onto the medallion.
DO NOT CUT THE LID TO SIZE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE OF THE STYLE OF BOX YOU WANT TO MAKE!
This is where you can get creative.I wet the surface of the box with mineral spirits to get a feel for what it will look like when finished and then start laying my selections across the top.Contrast is what you are after,either in grain or color or both.

At this point we have a box body with corner splines.Our lid is still oversized, so we can stop here and just use it to make a traditional box,one where the lid sets on top.

For some, this may be the best option.They may not have all the required tools or may feel their skills need a little more honing.Or, you could leapfrog over the next few stages and pick up the project again when we do the medallion....

Forgive me, I don’t hang out here all that often. I finally had the opportunity to visit a master woodworker who still uses traditional methods and tools. So I thought I share a few snapshots with y’all.

I have spent the last few days in the workshop working out how to make this jig.. and have it durable and repeatable and totally accurate and easy to use.Actually this jig can be used for two different projects … well probably more that two but thats all I have used it for so far.To start, I had to build a table to go over the bandsaw table for the jig to pivot on. Next step is to make the ends of the segments curved. Shell-like if you want.For that we need a new jig.. Yeah I know some of you haven’t finished the first one..!This is ultra simple.Firstly a fresh piece of ply .. 1/4 ” is fine.I inserted a bearing to make this more durable .. same same as last one.This was positioned 4.5 ” from the end[centred on the width] and an arc cut on the end via the circle cutting jig.. same same.Cut two fences same as the one of the first jig ...
