Big Pine Board Suggestions---First steps--Roughing it out

119 days ago by Durnik150 | 4 comments »

Hello again all, After thinking about and looking at the suggestions provided, I decided to take a piece of one suggestion and run with it. I am going to take this 8’ board and turn it into a couch table—kinda. Ulimately this will end up being four separate tables linked together by puzzle piece cutouts. If you want one table about 24 inches square, you only use one part of the table. If you need a longer table (maybe for serving at a party) you can piece together up to all fou...

"Art Box" Tutorial #10: Curves Ahead

129 days ago by Andy | 9 comments »

This is the fun part! Up to this point, everything we have done has been carefully layed out and measured. This phase is more free form, its where we can cut loose a little, and see what we get.But a little care must be used or we can wind up with a ruined box. That happened on occasion when I first started playing around with this concept a few years ago.Just go slow and you will be fine. I like to mount my box to the “Moaning Stool”,to keep it from moving. This places it at a...

resawing #5: Utility pole crossbar resawing, and another small tragedy

129 days ago by Gary Fixler | 6 comments »

Because time is flying, it’s already 3 months ago that a car ran into a telephone pole (and street light) outside my office building, knocking it (them) down. I ran out and got some streetside safety gear, and my little electric chainsaw. Here I am, making all of that look too tiny: With no accessible outlet anywhere nearby (and no truck yet with bed-outlet), I had to settle for my Irwin carpenter saw. The pole was all hollow inside from rot and bugs when I sn...

"Art Box" Tutorial #9: Get a grip.

134 days ago by Andy | 7 comments »

The handle. You dont really need a handle to open this box.You can just press down on the top,at the back, and the front will lift up. But a handle keeps the finger prints down and adds to the overall design too.It can accentuate the linear flow if it is long and delicate,or it may add more of a whimsical feel to the box if it is stubby and rounded. And it is a visual tie-in to the medallion if they are made from the same wood. For this box, we are going to make a handle, and cut out ...

Saw Blade Cleaning - My way?

149 days ago by ChunkyC | 8 comments »

Well I had some down time in the shop this evening and thought it would be a good time to do some loooong needed maintenance. Tonight’s chore, cleaning saw blades. I’ve always use some form of a pitch and resin remover in the past. But after the last move, most things, including the resin remover, never made the trip this far west. So I did some reading on the WWW and the two most popular methods to clean saw blades, sans resin cleaner, is: 1) Simple Green2) Oven Cleaner...

"Art Box" Tutorial #7: Put a lid on it.

150 days ago by Andy | 15 comments »

Three lid choices. DO NOT CUT THE LID TO SIZE UNTIL YOU ARE SURE OF THE STYLE OF BOX YOU WANT TO MAKE! At the start of this tutorial I mentioned that we would look at three ways to make this box. We are at a point in the project, where we need to decide how we want our lid to open. You will need to look at each type and decide which is your favorite or the easiest for you to make. I suggest following on with this tutorial and weighing the pros and cons of construction, before making a f...

Traditional Chinese Woodworking #2: Preparing stock

151 days ago by chscholz | 7 comments »

It’s all about efficiency. For us hobbyists it is interesting to see how full-time hand tool users perform the dreaded task of stock preparation. Well, it’s all about efficenty. It is important to note that Liu Shifu currently does not have an apprentice who would possibly be helping preparing stock. Yes, he would like to see someone take over his shop, continue his life’s work so to speak, but this is not an option at this point. In some way it is lucky that we met Liu Shif...
