Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

The aim of this project is to design and build a static-blade saw that replaces the rotating blade with a japanese handsaw blade which is very thin and removes little wood during the cut leaving a very thin ‘kerf’ (< 0.5mm). Japanese handsaws are well known to cut aggressively and unlike european saws they do so on the pull stroke. Also, the blades in japanese handsaws are designed to be easily removed from the handle. If this blade were fixed at a slight slope away from the in...

Here is a link for pics of the sale items.

Hello all. I am in need. A need to fill the void. The void is an empty spot. The empty spot in an area of the shop I haven’t seen in years. There actually is a floor under all that “junk” as the bride would say. (I say golden treasures.)
But, what I need now is spiritual help and a set of free plans for a drift boat or dory. I know I can build one, just need the plans. Have looked and downloaded several but cant find ones concerning a Montana style. Those guys craft some s...

A couple of days ago I decided it was time to build a rack to organize my nuts, bolts, screws, washers and other fasteners. I don’t know how I got so many but man, they are everywhere. As I sort thru them I am listing them and anything else I either don’t need, use or have more than one of on ebay. So far I’ve listed over 75 items I think and still have more to go. A couple of items are either rare or expensive like a Starrett calibrated master square set (http://cgi.ebay.co...

Can I put pics in the blog? I’d like to share my project with you guys, but it would be better if you can see it. Let me know please. We were given an overflowing truckload of scrap hardwood a fellow woodworker who was moving to south america. A lot of it was t and g floor cut offs and most of the ironwood planks were stained half way down the length and most all of it was stock rejected due to imperfections. So I thought it was a great opportunity to hone my joinery skills and do someth...

In this episode I build a weight organizer for all of the free weights. It only took about 2 hours to build which is not a lot of time. I changed my design 2 times and Im glad I did because my original design would not have worked. I use 2 2×4s and 2 12 in 2×4s for the base.

This box required a great deal more time and care during the final sanding, mostly in trying to maintain the edge of the ridges. At first I intended to keep them as crisp as possible…which took alot of time…but I didnt care for the look afterwards. It just looked too machine made, not as organic as like.I started out with a concept of sand dunes that I thought would tie in nicely with the grain of the Myrtlewood, but thats about it.I dont try and plan out every detail of the shaping a...
