random #1: Walnut Wood - I just need to know...

277 days ago by Gary Fixler | 24 comments »

Does anyone else – when working with black walnut – think it smells delicious? I just want to eat it whenever I’m cutting it. I was recently cutting out a ball blank from a glue-up of walnut, maple, and wenge, the latter two of which don’t really have a smell when cut. But the walnut! My dull band saw blade was more burning than cutting, and I was just about drooling all over the table. It smelled like warm cinnamon chocolate bread pudding. I almost ran to the bakery i...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #29: Go Ask The Lac-Bug About Finishing Wood

448 days ago by frank | 7 comments »

Go Ask The Lac-Bug About Finishing WoodIn one of my previous comments on Finishing Recipes and Tricks by SteveKorz and the corresponding forum, I offered these last words; ”I mean when we start thinking about shellac, maybe we should also consult with the lac bug.” I know that one can get technical when it comes to talking about finishing along with all those books and DVDs out there, along with all the recipes we get so hung up in and about….so I have decided to offer a ...

63 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 16 comments »

A Great Breakfast Rita and I had a great breakfast and visit with Dave Mitchell and his wife. They are passing through Billings and stayed at the campgrounds down the street since they are pulling their little camp trailer. We had a nice visit last night. I gave him the shop tour and showed the few pieces that we have been able to keep over the years. Now they have left it is time to get back on this little project for Rita. A Recap (Short Version) I started making this project...

2 Year Project Finally Complete

63 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 19 comments »

Crossin’ it off the list! It was just a small project but one that I had neglected since December 2008 and since October 2007 before that. That was the original start date. Anyway, I finished it up today and Mama’s happy so everybody’s happy. I also reclaimed a little space that it was taking up in the shop. It is amazing how those little projects eat up space on the shelves. Exercise Discipline I should make a rule that once a project is started I can’t qu...

Indian Intarsia

546 days ago by Allison | 19 comments »

I thought I would try my hand at writing a blog here. This is a totally different way for me as far as patterns go. I am used to a pattern that is on a sheet of paper the size the object will be when done. and then you make copies and cut out the pieces of the paper pattern and place them on your wood. This pattern came like this. One sheet of paper NOT actual size. Then the pattern itself IS in pieces you need at the size they are suppose to be. When I first started this, a couple days ago, I ...

Pelicans #1: Sanding Pads and Pelicans

259 days ago by Allison | 13 comments »

I am working on a couple Pelicans that I am hoping to incorporate into a “big picture” somehow. They are done completely in hardwoods and I was thinking of perhaps sharing how I sanded little pieces such as these. I have already started and as you can see I still have pencil marks for an eye on one. However when I brought my camera into the shop to show how I was going to sand these lil’ pieces I noticed how dirty, (dusty, sawdust, etc.) my little sanding pads were. They are...

A Small Project for Rita (2 years in the making)

65 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 18 comments »

Yeah, that’s right – 2 years… I plan on finishing this little cabinet up this weekend and I will post more details. The cabinet is made of black walnut and the drawers are made of curly ambrosia maple. This is a great combination. I started this project 2 years ago and I am finally going to cross it off the “unfinished projects” list. Today I got all the little drawers fitted and tomorrow I will cut the corners to add the contrasting keys. Then it wi...

Wood IDs #4: mystery ornamental branch identified

257 days ago by Gary Fixler | 4 comments »

After some online snooping, it looks like the branch I found the other day is of the Juglandaceae Family, which is to say it’s a walnut. Here’s some evidence… The chambers in the middle, seen here in my sample comprise what is known as a “chambered pith” (a pith being the center of a tree/branch/twig). Here's how it happens (in elaborate, if brief science talk). When it comes to chambered piths, it seems the only two choices spoken of online are black walnut (...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #25: WoodWorking Vision

467 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

WoodWorking Vision ....how big is your wood-working vision?....and what happens to your head-room once the expansion within your head decides to get a vision of be-ing a-head outside?....where will you get your vision from and will you also frequent the market-places of traditions to honor the money-changers? ....for without a vision your wood will perish! ....just as the fire you feel within your belly of now, will just as soon also go into the alley ways of extinction, just like ...

Calling All Texas Lumberjocks...

325 days ago by woodchips | 5 comments »

Hey Guys, I told a friend I’d try and sell some of his black walnut so here’s the offer. I’m trying to put together a package deal since he wants to sell all 7000 bf of it in one fell swoop, of course it doesn’t have to be all one buyer. Anyway the wood is all air dried, all 10/4 and 5/4 stuff, some of it is up to 12” in width and none of it is less than 6’ long with most of it 8’ up to 12’ in length. I know lots of ya’ll might not b...
