I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!

Yes it’s cheap, and most of the time it will warp as soon as it is removed from the stack, but it can also be dangerous. Acording to an employee at Owl Hardwood in Lombard, IL, there is an instance where metal was found between the plys. The consumer that bought it found what appeared to be a utility knife blade while he was ripping the sheet on a table saw and in doing so, destroyed his blade. I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. Well, I never did have the time to post the progress of this project as the actual progress occurred but it was completed and now I have a few moments to finish up this series and check it off my list.
This project was much more time consuming than I anticipated but a good learning experience as it had several challenges. I’m relatively proud of it and KT loves it as we have a closet again (our clothes have been hanging from a hand rail supported by the two sides of our loft balcony ...

I’m in the midst of finishing up a project I have really enjoyed. Sure, it has taken me two times the hours I bid, but I am happy with the result. Actually, it has come out better than I expected, which is always a nice surprise.
This is a functional-art piece I wish I wasn’t selling, to be honest. But, I have already spent all of the down payment. So, giving the money back is not possible, so the customer will get her desk.

I believe this will be the last of the trees I post in this ongoing series that I’ve already identified. Well, I am finally graduating to furniture. I intend to blog the journey in this series to share what I learn in the transition from small boxes to full size furniture. I’ve done large projects before but furniture is sort of the ‘holy grail’ of woodworking, in my mind. It is what I would really like to do (if I could afford the lumber). By the way, my mom’s birthday is June 21st (we will see how close I get to the the deadline.)

I saw this design in a finewoodworking article, and really liked the design, and functionality of the piece, and decided to follow along. I did not use FWW plans, but created my own to fit my space, and needs, while keeping the general design, and concept of the FWW piece in mind. (I made mine, smaller, and shallower then FWW cabinet, also the interior is much different).

Several have asked about what I am working on now, so I thought I would take a minute and post some progress photos.
My current work is a Kitchen Shelving and Desk system in Birch to match the styling of the exisiting cabinets built in the early 1960’s. Seemed like a fairly straight forward project for a past customer, and I like working for them. They “discovered” me, and that “Rates” in my book, regardless of what they want me to do.

72”x24” 1-3/4” thick Top = $25Groz vise = $40Misc fasteners and hardware = $10Building your own workbench that actually fits in a tight space that has no space for a workbench = PRICELESS
Now I just need to use scrap wood, and design legs to hold the workbench horizontally… I made it extra tall, cause every other bench I work on I get back pains from having to bend too much.
In the mean time, I just improvise and put something under to hold it straight just so that I can work on it ...
