Router Table #1: New Yankee Style Router Table

400 days ago by Jon3 | 2 comments »

So, I’ve needed a router table, and I wanted an nice big surface area. I’ve used some of the lighter weight ones before and didnt’ care for them. The only product I used that I liked was the Bench Dog with the CI top, and the whole system, including a nice beefy 3HP router would have set me back around $1500. I couldn’t seem to find the NYW router table episode on tivo, even after a month or two, so I went ahead and bought the plans and the DVD off their website. ...

Transforming a Kitchen Cookbook Nook

318 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood. They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Lumber Making #1: A "Mini" Series - up to present

514 days ago by Dorje | 19 comments »

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet! Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April… A couple p...

"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #30: Out in The Woods

67 days ago by frank | 6 comments »

Out in The Woods So for this short story, lets set the milieu a bit, turn up some volume and think a bit about what it means to be ‘out in the woods’.... ”Can’t tell the bad from the good, I’m out in the wood then I’m lost in the wood…. Can’t tell the bad from the good,I’m out in the woods then I’m lost in the woods” —by Leon Russell ——————————̵...

Baby Rattles #2: Finished one set, starting some new ones

108 days ago by Alan | 1 comment »

Finally finished up the first two: And just in time as it seems our friends are all having babies at once. So I’m trying some others and practicing on the lathe. The two dumbbell shaped ones below are similar to the above two. Still need to be sanded and finished. I read about painting / staining with food coloring so I think I will try that with the lighter one. I also bought some walnut and birch dowels, cut them and hollowed them out with the router. I then filled th...

Work(shop) in Progress #2: Workbench: The TOP

156 days ago by PurpLev | 7 comments »

72”x24” 1-3/4” thick Top = $25Groz vise = $40Misc fasteners and hardware = $10Building your own workbench that actually fits in a tight space that has no space for a workbench = PRICELESS Now I just need to use scrap wood, and design legs to hold the workbench horizontally… I made it extra tall, cause every other bench I work on I get back pains from having to bend too much. In the mean time, I just improvise and put something under to hold it straight just so that I can work on it ...

Sewing Table #2: My First Fine Furnature!!! Getting Started... Milling the Lumber

163 days ago by Blake | 25 comments »

Well, I am finally graduating to furniture. I intend to blog the journey in this series to share what I learn in the transition from small boxes to full size furniture. I’ve done large projects before but furniture is sort of the ‘holy grail’ of woodworking, in my mind. It is what I would really like to do (if I could afford the lumber). By the way, my mom’s birthday is June 21st (we will see how close I get to the the deadline.) The Design: Here is the original...
