Hand Tools Cabinet #1: It all begins with a box

294 days ago by PurpLev | 4 comments »

I saw this design in a finewoodworking article, and really liked the design, and functionality of the piece, and decided to follow along. I did not use FWW plans, but created my own to fit my space, and needs, while keeping the general design, and concept of the FWW piece in mind. (I made mine, smaller, and shallower then FWW cabinet, also the interior is much different). This is basically a fingerjointed box that the doors are cut off from (to match grain) and hinged on a piano hinge. pre...

Router Table #1: New Yankee Style Router Table

772 days ago by Jon3 | 2 comments »

NOTE All of my photos have been migrated to a new provider, and the links in my posts are likely out of date. You can find the photos here. So, I’ve needed a router table, and I wanted an nice big surface area. I’ve used some of the lighter weight ones before and didnt’ care for them. The only product I used that I liked was the Bench Dog with the CI top, and the whole system, including a nice beefy 3HP router would have set me back around $1500. I couldn’t se...

Lumber Making #1: A "Mini" Series - up to present

886 days ago by Dorje | 19 comments »

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet! Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April… A couple p...

Transforming a Kitchen Cookbook Nook

690 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood. They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Closet Rebuild #2: Done.

879 days ago by Jeff | 8 comments »

Well, I never did have the time to post the progress of this project as the actual progress occurred but it was completed and now I have a few moments to finish up this series and check it off my list. This project was much more time consuming than I anticipated but a good learning experience as it had several challenges. I’m relatively proud of it and KT loves it as we have a closet again (our clothes have been hanging from a hand rail supported by the two sides of our loft balcony ...

American Hanging Cupboard #3: Cutting the tenons - What NOT to do...

28 days ago by Mark D. | 3 comments »

So last night I began cutting the tenons on the table saw. Now before everyone tells me I’m lucky to still have my fingers or flames me for posting these pics, here’s a disclaimer. DO NOT use a table saw without the use of a throat plate. Disastrous things CAN and likely WILL happen… (See Also: Standard disclaimer “Blade Guard Removed for Clarity”) That being said… I’ve never had problems making cuts with the dado stack in the tablesaw without ...

American Hanging Cupboard #2: Stock Preparation - Rough Dimensioning

29 days ago by Mark D. | 3 comments »

So unfortunately I got carried away actually working rather than documenting the process, but I did snap this photo before I quit for the night. So far I’ve gotten all the face frame pieces cut down to final size and have marked out the tenons on the rails. I also cut a test mortise in some scrap that went through the same milling process so I can test the fit of the tenons as I cut them. The dado stack is in the saw ready to rock. I will begin cutting the joinery tonight(I ho...

Workity, health, and wood

39 days ago by Lisa Chan | 2 comments »

Just taking a small break from the work day. Today, I am researching the shape and form of Russian Spindles. I made a cursory spindle last night. I had never spun with a supported spindle that didn’t have a hook at the top. It was frustrating and my spindle didn’t seem to get much twist going… then I realized that perhaps it had something to do with the shape itself. Looked into it and discovered I left quite a bit of extra wood on that thing. Examining the spindles...

turnings #2: turnings - some failures as prelude to some successes

122 days ago by Gary Fixler | 4 comments »

Earlier this week I ended up with some scrap baltic birch ply, and cut it into squares with the band saw. I sanded the faces a bit and glued them all together overnight with Titebond III and a Bessey K-Body clamp: A little turning later: And I was starting to get a wine glass shape: That’s probably where I should have stopped. I knew that going thin-stem with the plywood in this orientation was asking for trouble, but I just kept going anyway, mad with power: ...
