"Hobbit Holes in MyWorld" --by RusticWoodArt #30: Out in The Woods

439 days ago by frank | 6 comments »

Out in The Woods So for this short story, lets set the milieu a bit, turn up some volume and think a bit about what it means to be ‘out in the woods’.... ”Can’t tell the bad from the good, I’m out in the wood then I’m lost in the wood…. Can’t tell the bad from the good,I’m out in the woods then I’m lost in the woods” —by Leon Russell ——————————̵...

If you are just surfing through the internet about Walking Canes, and you want to see some actual canes I’ve carved, click on the Widget Picture of the cane here. That project has more than 40 other links to other unique carved walking canes I’ve built. This blog entry is for showing a new concept sketch of a carved walking cane design that I am working on so that the prospective customer can view the concept drawings and provide his input, or approval. thanks for readi...

Baby Rattles #2: Finished one set, starting some new ones

480 days ago by Alan | 1 comment »

Finally finished up the first two: And just in time as it seems our friends are all having babies at once. So I’m trying some others and practicing on the lathe. The two dumbbell shaped ones below are similar to the above two. Still need to be sanded and finished. I read about painting / staining with food coloring so I think I will try that with the lighter one. I also bought some walnut and birch dowels, cut them and hollowed them out with the router. I then filled th...

Work(shop) in Progress #2: Workbench: The TOP

527 days ago by PurpLev | 7 comments »

72”x24” 1-3/4” thick Top = $25Groz vise = $40Misc fasteners and hardware = $10Building your own workbench that actually fits in a tight space that has no space for a workbench = PRICELESS Now I just need to use scrap wood, and design legs to hold the workbench horizontally… I made it extra tall, cause every other bench I work on I get back pains from having to bend too much. In the mean time, I just improvise and put something under to hold it straight just so that I can work on it ...

Sewing Table #2: My First Fine Furnature!!! Getting Started... Milling the Lumber

535 days ago by Blake | 25 comments »

Well, I am finally graduating to furniture. I intend to blog the journey in this series to share what I learn in the transition from small boxes to full size furniture. I’ve done large projects before but furniture is sort of the ‘holy grail’ of woodworking, in my mind. It is what I would really like to do (if I could afford the lumber). By the way, my mom’s birthday is June 21st (we will see how close I get to the the deadline.) The Design: Here is the original...

A chair for my office #3: Finished, with reservations

602 days ago by Dan Lyke | 4 comments »

Got a client who’s being a little slow this morning, so I took the time to whip together a seat for my chair. A few lessons learned: I really do need to be able to visualize the chair all the way through the seat, the ad-hoc mounting here meant that the seat is a little higher than I wanted, so the backslats don’t ride on my back where I wanted. The Domino makes joinery almost too easy. I love that tool. For a real “Maloof” style look I need to be wo...

DANGER! Chinese Plywood

603 days ago by Tom Adamski | 40 comments »

Yes it’s cheap, and most of the time it will warp as soon as it is removed from the stack, but it can also be dangerous. Acording to an employee at Owl Hardwood in Lombard, IL, there is an instance where metal was found between the plys. The consumer that bought it found what appeared to be a utility knife blade while he was ripping the sheet on a table saw and in doing so, destroyed his blade. No coments if the person was injured, but I would not want to be around when pieces of ca...

A chair for my office #2: Got the backslats in

623 days ago by Dan Lyke | 7 comments »

Nothing terribly profound to say here, just working through and learning a lot, in between assorted other projects. I’ve glued the back and the front together, I need to make the seat support so I can glue the front assembly to the back, right now that’s just a test fit. In no particular order: Gluing up recurves is harder than I thought it’d be, even with the jig I built to help hold the curve in the backslat. need more clamps. I should be less stingy when it co...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #10: "Polyporus betulinus" --by RusticWoodArt

686 days ago by frank | 4 comments »

Polyporus betulinus ....just thought I would post a shot of one of my keepers of the ideas that fungi around inside my head, before manifesting their molds of desire in the mind-full beauty of ‘wood art’…. And so if any want to follow, then here’s a short course in General Mycology….or as some may say,....WHO-ology and WHAT-ology….! Walking the woods and gathering wood is not the only thing I gather, since what good is wood unless ones starts to un...
