Step #1 – Cleaning & Rust Removal
I have been inspired by a number of resources to start using my hand planes and start on the slippery slope of a hand plane collection. Not the least of whom has been Wayne, our own Lumberjocks plane guru. Of course I have also explored a number of websites including our good friend Phi...

I had a request for the dimensions I used. These are a bit ugly because I just pulled the dimensions as I needed them and was indiscriminate of the plane I was on in the rendering and there are duplicates thoughout. My apologies but it was just for my own benefit when I added them. However, I wanted to get them posted as I’m already a day a late with the post.
Bob Babcock, if you view this thread, can you suggest a place to house the actual sketchup file? I don’t know if I want...

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

Another long week at work, so I will post another of the planes that is in good shape. This plane is a Stanley Bailey 5 1/4 Junior Jack Plane. I purchased this plane on ebay and it arrived in the mail today. It came with it’s original box and is in good shape.
This is another plane that was used for training woodworkers. It is 11 1/2”Long, 1 3/4”Wide and weighs 3 3/4lbs. This plane was made from 1921 until 1983 and this one appears to be a more receint model. It ca...

Today was a day with a lot chores to be done, so I picked a plane to rework that required little effort. This is a Stanley Bedrock plane from the mid-1930s. Bedrock planes are Stanley’s preimum line of handplanes. They were made in sizes from #2-#8. All of the planes are numbered in the 600 series (e.g. 603, 606, etc.) The early planes had a rounded side similar to normal Stanley Bailey planes. In the early 1900s the planes changed to a more square side as you can see from the ph...

I finished up the restoration work on the #3 I have been working on. Things have been going slow due to work and family commitments. I thought I would get the blog entry done this morning before heading out to the woodworking show. I’m taking my daughter and her boyfriend. It should be a lot of fun.
I also picked up a couple of items yesterday. My mother-in-law as been wanting a workbench for a while and I found one on craigslist yesterday. I love craigslist. The photos of the ...

I’m doing another easy plane today. I’m watching Norm build table saw jigs this morning and thought I would get another plane posted before I headed out to turn those pens. This is another ebay find. I had been looking for one a while and only seen a couple listed on ebay.
My plan is to use this plane as my miter plane until I can afford a Lie-Nielson or perhaps find one for $5 at a garage sale (one can only hope).
This plane was made in the United Kingdom and was used...

Last week I finished drilling many holes for the sides of the well. These included the holes for the clamping bars as well as the pilot holes and countersinks for the confirmat screws. This took a bit of time because of all the measuring and trial and error positioning to ensure I didn’t make any major mistakes since the FWW plans were subject to interpretation and my sketchup plans (last entry) were a little inaccurate regarding the size of the clamping bars. It paid off though.
For ...

I have an update on the bench. The top is completed and I’m nearing the home stretch. I’m already starting to come up with ideas for special uses/jigs for the inserts in the well…
I measured and drilled the holes for the end supports of the well and then threaded my pipe stock and checked for level. I also cut the blocks that are moved when you need to adjust the lateral clamps and positioned them above each leg and the center support. I laid in the MDF panels to make sur...

I have just about finished the bench. As it is right now, everything is functioning and I have moved it over to the actual work area. Tasks completed include:1) Mounted clips on the stretcher for the face clamps;2) Drilled holes in the bars of the face clamps so they can be adjusted with speed pins;3) Milled and mounted the drop-in clamping blocks for the tail vice clamps (used in the well);4) Cut and mounted the planing wedge to the front rail.
Here are the pics.I don’t have a pic of...
