I went back and ripped down the front and back legs from 5.5” to 4” wide; it definitely looks better, much more symmetrical. I finally framed up the whole assembly today.
I received the new router bit I ordered, it only took a couple of days, pretty good in my book. Unfortunately none of the practice pieces seemed to work very good. I didn’t like the way the bead board looked and even with a 1/2” deep groove, there just didn’t seem to be enough supp...

So brief background is that about a 18 months ago, I bought a load of lumber off ebay. While there, I ended up also buying 350 BF of flatsawn white ash for $100. I figured, even if it ends up being ‘test’ pieces and shop projects, it would still be worth it. Fast forward to recently, and I’ve been planning to build a new bench, and I’ve pretty much decided on a Roubo.
I picked up the lovely Benchcrafted tail/wagon vise, a german bench screw, and some holdfasts.

By popular demand. ;) So here’s the finished project with the first coat of stain. I made some modifications to the original plans one of which is the seat height. At 6’5” it is perfect for me, but about an 1” too tall for my wife who’s about 5’8”. The bench is very sturdy and relatively light weight since it is made out of redwood. I imagine it would be much heavier if I had used oak. Like I said before, this was a fun project and not too diffi...

I love a plan when it comes together!
So when is woodworking fun? When you can steadily progress through the various steps with ease and accuracy. Yesterday I had a lot of fun cutting mortises with the Mortise Pal. If you’ve seen my review you know I’m a fan and my experience yesterday really confirmed my view.
I watched Charles Neil’s demonstration of Jessem’s Zip Slot Mortise Mill and although I haven’t used that tool, based on the video I’ve...

I’m a member of the San Antonio Woodworker’s Guild. The Guild recently decided to do a project for the San Antonio Museum of Art. The project is to build a bench to be used in the museum. The museum has several benches, so it was decided that ours would be similar yet distinctive.
Horace Staph, one of the elder statesmen of our Guild, came up with this idea and did all the necessary coordination with the museum as well as creating the conceptual design.
Prior to us gettin...

This is kind of random. I really want a small set of drawers on top of my bench for all the little stuff that accumulates. I want to make it attachable to the top and hang over the back by about a foot. This would allow me to remove it when needed and not take up too much space. Maybe it could attach using the dog holes, or maybe by some clamping fixture. Any ideas on this?
I had built my bench with Douglas Fir 4×4s from Home Depot. I kept the cutoffs and decided to use them for...

I’ve been working on a new bench and thought I’d share the progress in case anyone is interested. I read Scott Landis’ Workbench book and a few excerpts from the Swartz’s book and I’ve come up with this. I’ve totally cheaped-out so far, and so far no regrets. Everything accept the vise faces is going to be constuction lumber; 2×6’s and 2×4’s (where I come from these are made from Spruce). $60 is the total bill for the base and top ...

Here are some shots of the imitation Pottery Barn bench I constructed for my wife for Christmas. I wasn’t satisfied with the finish so I still have some work to do. Luckily my wife is looking forward to helping me (re)finish it.
I think I want to add some faux wear to this front corner before I re-stain.

Howdy folks,
got a little more progress on the shop this weekend. It’s been a long project, and I’m far from done.
This weekend was spent avoiding the last summer blast of heat, and hanging the doors on the shop…
This may seem like a small step, but for me it marks when I can truly start moving in equipment and stuff into the shop.
Starting to get a little crowded in there, but that’s the nature of the beast… at only 240 sq ft I’ll be doing...

Aginst my better judgment, someone convinced me to set up at a local festival-craft show. The last couple of weeks we have been working hard getting ready for the show at Riverfest at Leavenworth. I was thinking that after the show we would be able to slow down and mellow out a little but, I think not. I got so many orders for signs that the next few weeks will be a bit hectic again. Well not “so many” orders, I think it was 10 or 11 but some of them want more then one sign. I ...
