Workbench 101

244 days ago by PanamaJack | 19 comments »

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

Jigs as Important as Tools

257 days ago by Eric | 4 comments »

My wife is out of the country attending a conference, and while I do have kid duty (age 4.5 and 3), I still manage to steal away from time to time to do some woodworking. Gotta love those DVDs that have the “Play Continuously” option! So even though I’m supposed to be working on my bench, I get these ideas of things to make and want to act on them. One of them is to make my wife a little box. She has no need of a little box, but it’s the thought that counts. Well, t...

Garden Bench #1: My First Project (2002)

266 days ago by jackd942 | 7 comments »

Well, here is my first project I completed back in about 2002 or so. It is a garden bench that I made for my grandparents to put on their porch. These are recent pictures and as you can see it has held up pretty well over the last 5 years. I believe this is made out of cypress. I took some lumber that my grandfather had stored outside for probably 20 years. It was really rough stuff, but after sanding, then planing it revealed some really nice wood. No finish, just completed and set o...

Small Workbench #1: The Design

281 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 4 comments »

I wanted to make a small bench what would be dedicated for sharpening. I wanted to have a place where my sharpening stones would be ready to use. I used to have to find a place to set everything up, and sometimes I didn’t do that ahead of time. This meant I might have worked with a tool longer without sharpening. That’s not good, because a dull tool is a dangerous tool.I came up with this simple bench. I made it somewhat heavy, to it to keep it from moving around. I also made it somewha...

Greene And Greene Inspired Projects #1: Greene Inspired bench ... "from an amazeing wood find" ...the story behind the projects

286 days ago by Dusty | 5 comments »

Karson, created and posted the forum topic entitled “Your Most Amazing Wood find. Some how, I had missed this posting. While “shuffling” I came upon Karson’s posting randomly. I read Karson’s story with great interest and enjoyed the comments and various stories and fellow Lumberjocks various wood finds that followed. Karsons’ forum posting inspired me to blog about my experience along with the end results from my own amazing wood find. I didn’t want to hija...

Holtzapffel Bench #3: The Hard Choice of Hardware

319 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 1 comment »

A fellow Holtzapffelian, Roger (here at Lumberjocks), is writing about his project regarding the same bench. He started out by purchasing his hardware for the bench and is now in the process of picking out his wood. That reminds me of a deliberation I’m going through with my own bench. What hardware to use? The plans call for a quick-release end vise – nothing too fancy, I suppose. I want the Jörgensen version – I think it had a 12” maximum opening. The maximum...

Holtzapffel Bench #2: A Lumber Jock Meets Lumber Jack

320 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 6 comments »

Last weekend I made my first trip to a local lumber yard for the Holtzapffel bench project. After much deliberation, I had made a firm decision on White Ash as my choice of wood. I’ve not been to many lumber yards, and I’ve never gone to pick out my own rough-cut slices before, so this was quite exciting for me. In my haste, I planned poorly for the hauling of big, heavy woods and had to rent a Home Depot truck for the duration. I drive a Mazda3 which, while Zoom-Zoom and util...

Holtzapffel Bench #1: Setting Up the Scene

320 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 6 comments »

My first big project will be the Holtzapffel cabinetmaker's workbench. If you’ve kept up with Christopher Schwarz, you already know well what I am talking about. It’s a beautiful machine, and I want to start my shop off with this cornerstone of hand tool work. I’ve long sought after the European benches you see in the magazines, but the money put them well outside of my reach. Just as I was about to fold and build a modern design on the same, I found some articles rega...

Which bench should I get?

331 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I am planning on setting up a very small hand tool workshop for my father-in-law for a retirement gift. It will be in a small storage shed in his back yard. I plan to add some insulation and Sheetrock making it comfortable. The one thing I would like to get for him is a European style bench. Please help me choose one. Any opinions are helpful. I am looking for a simple, compact, hand tool bench. It needs to be a great value and I know it can’t be the highest quality. But I just wa...

Hand Plane Restoration #4: Stanley Bench Plane

339 days ago by David | 12 comments »

Stanley Bench Plane Restoration UPDATE I have been a bit frustrated, as I can’t use my shop until the outside portion of our house reconstruction is complete which should be very soon. I have been using the down time to restore my Stanley bench plane. As soon as I get back in the shop, I have plans to make a video tool review so I am quite anxious to get going! My Stanley Bench Plane restoration project is near completion. As a reminder, this is NOT a plane with intrinsic collector ...
