I’ve been building a fence here at the house I’m renting (see blog). I ended up getting 2 sections out of one board as opposed to the 1 section I originally thought so I figured I’d use some of the material for a couple of projects. The first one is this bench, the second will be a carved screen door. This project is going to be a little tricky because I don’t really have “fresh” materials, nor do I have the thickness’s I would buy if this was goin...

I am working on yet another piece and thought I’d share me project so far with you guys.
The Magnolia ‘Salicifolia’ tree had stood in the grounds of the Inner Temple on London’s Thames for over 80 years but due to a fungus it had to come down.
My original plan was to use the timber as a practice piece that I could use my new Arbortech grinder on, however whilst the guys where cutting the tree down the girl in charge of the gardens asked what I would do with the t...

A deck bench seats two or more people so they can enjoy viewing from the deck. Good deck benches can be built practically without much expense. If we want to, we can build a deck bench ourselves.
You have a nice deck with a great view, but what is missing?
How about a nice deck bench to sit on and relax as you enjoy that great deck. This bench can be the perfect addition to your deck and believe it or not this is not the type of project you have to hire some expensive contractor for. No...

Edited 8/21/09: A couple of years ago I took an intro class on wood carving. The school had on hand some carving benches for the students to use but, naturally, I had to make my own design. Below is the design that I came up with. It was small enough for me to lug to class and large enough to handle most of the carving projects that I anticipate doing. It also allowed me the flexibility to accommodate various sizes of work and be able to reposition them without unscrewing and re-screwing...

About a year ago, my grandfather approached me about building a project with him in his shop. He had done this many times before, but the arrogant kid/teenager/college student never had the time. However, this time I jumped at the idea. I don’t know if it was the timing, the project, etc… but everything seemed to work out.
To understand the importance of this, you have to understand that my family is not one of those “close-knit” family units. Everybody is divorced (some a couple of times)...

OK If you look at the cut list from the first post those 2×12x12’ are sliced up into a bunch of 33” long chunks and ripped in half and then again into 5 1/4” (for slop) The Tenon is achieved by tacking a block of Plywood (mine is 2 1/2”) wide at the Ends of two of the inner boards in the stack your going to glue up.
I then Set up a stop in my miter Guage and choped 2 1/2 Off the outboard pieces and glued and clamped them…
This is the setup before glue...

Well its time for me to get all of the mortise and tenons ready for the base. First I had a few holes that I wanted to drill in the legs for hold downs ( actually for holding up). My drill press wouldn’t go all of the way through the legs so I finished the holes with a bit brace and a 3/4” auger bit checking for when the point came through. Then I flipped the leg and finished them.
I wanted to get my strecher length right on, so I took my measurement right off the legs.

Home Tour MadnessIn two weeks (April 26) our house is going to be featured on the neighborhood home tour. Over 1000 people will be walking through…. gulp.
I have a to-do list longer than my arm.
I’ll give you more details on that later.
Item 50: Build DeckPreviously we had a crummy set of dilapidated stairs leading to our back door.
After some poorly planned landscaping we ended up with a dirt circle. Seen behind me in this picture. On the upside it was a good place ...

Add me to the list of fans of the Jim White Newfangled workbench. I stopped at my local lumber yard today and picked up several 2×4x12’ boards. Then I headed up to Jim Capozzi’s shop where we dressed the boards and cut almost all of the major parts to size, I didn’t bring my 2×8 with me or I”m sure we’d have gotten ALL of the parts cut. I just looked at Ben’s bench blog, and realized I need to cut two more back bench support pieces, That’s n...
