The base is completed. This is way beyond the weekend project I planned.
Now I’m thinking about a finish for the base. I originally planned on painting it a solid color with an exterior oil paint, but the douglass fir looks good to me (my wife thinks so too), so I might just do a BLO/turp finish on that also.

I have just about finished the bench. As it is right now, everything is functioning and I have moved it over to the actual work area. Tasks completed include:1) Mounted clips on the stretcher for the face clamps;2) Drilled holes in the bars of the face clamps so they can be adjusted with speed pins;3) Milled and mounted the drop-in clamping blocks for the tail vice clamps (used in the well);4) Cut and mounted the planing wedge to the front rail.

I had a request for the dimensions I used. These are a bit ugly because I just pulled the dimensions as I needed them and was indiscriminate of the plane I was on in the rendering and there are duplicates thoughout. My apologies but it was just for my own benefit when I added them. However, I wanted to get them posted as I’m already a day a late with the post.

Today was a day with a lot chores to be done, so I picked a plane to rework that required little effort. This is a Stanley Bedrock plane from the mid-1930s. Bedrock planes are Stanley’s preimum line of handplanes. They were made in sizes from #2-#8. All of the planes are numbered in the 600 series (e.g. 603, 606, etc.) The early planes had a rounded side similar to normal Stanley Bailey planes. Thought I would get an easy one out of the way. I have to turn some pens this weekend for 4 of my co-workers that are retiring next month . I’m going to do some real nice kits and use some of my best materials. I’ll post some photos in the project section when I finish. It is also my Son’s 16th birthday so we have a party planned. I’ve been having blogging withdrawals and was hoping to get started on my next plane restoration. Tonight, after I was able to free myself from my last meeting of the day, I inspected the #4 I had set aside for restoration. As you can see from the photo’s this plane is pretty rough.

My wife is out of the country attending a conference, and while I do have kid duty (age 4.5 and 3), I still manage to steal away from time to time to do some woodworking. Gotta love those DVDs that have the “Play Continuously” option!

I wanted to make a small bench what would be dedicated for sharpening. I wanted to have a place where my sharpening stones would be ready to use. I used to have to find a place to set everything up, and sometimes I didn’t do that ahead of time. This meant I might have worked with a tool longer without sharpening. I actually began this project around 6-9 months ago, when I got into woodworking, and I did some of the original work then. It is surprising how far I’ve come in what I know to do, and not do, since then.
I had a leftover benchtop that I picked up basically free from family friends.
It was not pretty! It had a fairly thick finish on the top though, so with some elbow grease and some scraping, I managed to clean up the top somewhat.

My primary bench (I have a second that has been buried under stuff for years) has been frustrating me for quite a while. The top is composed of 2X6s which means it’s not as flat and level as I’d like. I’d decided a while ago that replacing the top with a double layer of 3/4” plywood would solve the problem. Eventually I’ll replace this with a real woodworking bench, so this is a temporary solution.
