Step #1 – Cleaning & Rust Removal
I have been inspired by a number of resources to start using my hand planes and start on the slippery slope of a hand plane collection. Not the least of whom has been Wayne, our own Lumberjocks plane guru. Of course I have also explored a number of websites including our good friend Phi...

The Sign of a Craftsman
Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Anybody that enters your shop and sees one of these beauties would have no doubt that you can administer dovetails with the skill of a legendary craftsman.
Here are some thoughts on this table style. The table is designed to accommodate a certain work style, particular...

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

Yesterday, I stopped by a certain big blue retailer to pick up the materials for my bench. I spent just a hair over $30.00 on a 12’ 2×12, some stain, some wipe on poly, and some Titebond II. I got started about 9 AM Eastern, and took lots of pics.
First, the aforementioned wood:
As I mentioned yesterday, I had them cut it into 6’ sections so it would fit in the Grand Cherokee. Also, the aforementioned liquid stuff:
As any rational human being would do, I s...

I am planning on setting up a very small hand tool workshop for my father-in-law for a retirement gift. It will be in a small storage shed in his back yard. I plan to add some insulation and Sheetrock making it comfortable.
The one thing I would like to get for him is a European style bench. Please help me choose one. Any opinions are helpful.
I am looking for a simple, compact, hand tool bench. It needs to be a great value and I know it can’t be the highest quality. But I just wa...

This is the router table that I have been working on. It has been an interesting experience in that this is my first attempt at building a cabinet and drawers.
The cabinet itself is made out of 3/4” cabinet grade plywood. The end panels and back are aligned using #20 biscuits, and secured with glue and screws, while the center panels are set in dadoed grooves. The face frame was constructed using pocket screws and aligned to the cabinet with buisquits. The face frame is made from...

Stanley Bench Plane Restoration UPDATE
My Stanley Bench Plane restoration project is progressing well. All parts have been cleaned of rust using the electrolytic rust removal process described in the prior blog entry. I was really impressed with how clean the parts were after the electrolytic de-rusting process.
As a reminder, this is NOT a plane with intrinsic collector value. I am restoring this “user plane” to be used on my bench. Before using any of these processes make sure you...

I finished up the restoration work on the #3 I have been working on. Things have been going slow due to work and family commitments. I thought I would get the blog entry done this morning before heading out to the woodworking show. I’m taking my daughter and her boyfriend. It should be a lot of fun.
I also picked up a couple of items yesterday. My mother-in-law as been wanting a workbench for a while and I found one on craigslist yesterday. I love craigslist. The photos of the ...

Well today I got to working on the second bench.
I assembled it and brought it over to the deck and trimmed up the straight bench and the curved bench so that they fit in the corner of the deck.
I then went and got the trim router with a 1/4” roundover (got to make it kid friendly) and a sander to get rid of the saw marks, saw cuts and roundover where the trim router won’t reach.
I did the edges on both surfaces of the benches and sanded both of them.
Here are ...

Well, I guess with my first blog entry I kind of set a precedence of being a scrounger so we’ll continue with a little project I made for the garden.Years ago I was given a huge cherry log. At 34” in diameter and 10’ long it was quite a monster setting in the driveway but as with all woodworkers I had visions of a beautiful piece of furniture when the time came. Sawing it up with the chainsaw was a quite chore and a feat in itself but we manage to get some beautiful wood. ...
