Step #1 – Cleaning & Rust Removal
I have been inspired by a number of resources to start using my hand planes and start on the slippery slope of a hand plane collection. Not the least of whom has been Wayne, our own Lumberjocks plane guru. Of course I have also explored...

The Sign of a Craftsman
Most woodworkers, including myself, have dreamed of building the traditional European style workbench. This has to be one of the greatest trademarks of a craftsman that even trumps the dovetail. Anybody that enters your shop and sees one of these beauties would have no doubt that you can administer dovetails with the skill of a legendary craftsman.
Here are some thoughts on this table style. The table is designed to accommodate a certain work style, particular...

i had a compund miter saw that i never used, coz it was in the corner, and i couldn’t et to it. i had a pegboard that i coudn’t reach.i had wood cut-off storage all over the place.my RAS and big table saw were at right angles to each other, and i like that. sort of like command central.i needed more wall storage; when i installed the RAS, i put up pegs for blades—wrong.

Over the past several years I have been needing and wanting to buy or maybe just make a workbench. I have gone to five woodworking shows in three states over the past two years. At these shows and in several magazines or catalogs I have noticed many of these really nice woodworking benches that are way far out of my reach as far as the $$$ involved. Finally after a elongated sick spell lasting nearly two months I finally get few boards together, screws, a very few nails and other items tha...

I am working on yet another piece and thought I’d share me project so far with you guys.
The Magnolia ‘Salicifolia’ tree had stood in the grounds of the Inner Temple on London’s Thames for over 80 years but due to a fungus it had to come down.
My original plan was to use the timber as a practice piece that I could use my new Arbortech grinder on, however whilst the guys where cutting the tree down the girl in charge of the gardens asked what I would do with the t...

About a year ago, my grandfather approached me about building a project with him in his shop. He had done this many times before, but the arrogant kid/teenager/college student never had the time. However, this time I jumped at the idea. I don’t know if it was the timing, the project, etc… but everything seemed to work out.
To understand the importance of this, you have to understand that my family is not one of those “close-knit” family units. Everybody is divorced (some a couple of times)...

Yesterday, I stopped by a certain big blue retailer to pick up the materials for my bench. I spent just a hair over $30.00 on a 12’ 2×12, some stain, some wipe on poly, and some Titebond II. I got started about 9 AM Eastern, and took lots of pics.
First, the aforementioned wood:
As I mentioned yesterday, I had them cut it into 6’ sections so it would fit in the Grand Cherokee. Also, the aforementioned liquid stuff:
As any rational human being would do, I s...

I am planning on setting up a very small hand tool workshop for my father-in-law for a retirement gift. It will be in a small storage shed in his back yard. I plan to add some insulation and Sheetrock making it comfortable.
The one thing I would like to get for him is a European style bench. Please help me choose one. Any opinions are helpful.
I am looking for a simple, compact, hand tool bench. It needs to be a great value and I know it can’t be the highest quality. But I just wa...

I’ve been working on a new bench and thought I’d share the progress in case anyone is interested. I read Scott Landis’ Workbench book and a few excerpts from the Swartz’s book and I’ve come up with this. I’ve totally cheaped-out so far, and so far no regrets. Everything accept the vise faces is going to be constuction lumber; 2×6’s and 2×4’s (where I come from these are made from Spruce). $60 is the total bill for the base and top ...
