Turkey Foot Cane - attached to shaft

02-11-2014 05:32 PM by mpounders | 3 comments »

Here is the process I used to attach the carved turkey foot to a bark-on shaft. I am not sure what type of wood the shaft is, but I selected it for the interesting bark it has. I have used this type before and the bark stays attached and has interesting colors and textures. The trick is to make a nice transition between it and the carving, trying to make it flow, nut just a carving stuck on top of a stick. I used wooden dowels and Titebond glue to join the carving to the stick. After the glue...

Turkey Foot Cane

01-31-2014 11:03 PM by mpounders | 7 comments »

I’m working on a cane for my son-in-law’s father. He’s a fanatical turkey hunter and this is a surprise for his birthday in March. I have a glue joint fight below that toe, so I have the grain of the wood running properly for strength....

12-02-2013 01:11 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 7 comments »

It’s the month of December already and that only means one thing – Elf Mode. While it appears I am in Elf Mode every day, during the holidays it goes to a new level. Not only do I enjoy making most of the gifts that I give, but I also like to participate in many exchanges that are held from several of the forums that I frequent. Yes – I LOVE to receive small pieces of others’ work! Recently, in my never ending quest to be organized I purchased a nice brush box ...

All work and no play?

08-30-2013 08:47 PM by mpounders | 7 comments »

When things slow down at work, I sometimes get to carve a bit in my office! I keep an extra glove, thumb guard, and a utility knife in my drawer, and it can be very calming to whittle on a ball or ornament or something for a few moments. I did this guy this afternoon, inspired by Don Mertz and Dave Stetson. He’s a little guy, about 2 1/2 inches total. I like the challenge of using using the utility knife to put details in such a small carving, although neither as small or detailed a...
