I have been asked to do a blog on converting a horse barn into my woodworking shop. Unfortunately I wasn’t with it enough to take pictures of the process so far. So I will recap what has happened up to now, then I will start taking picures as I go from here.
I started with the barn as left by the former owners. The barns had 5 horse stalls, a tack room, 2 storage areas, a central alley, and the hayloft. As part of the purchase agreement, the former owners took all the metal gates to ...

Wow! Time sure flies! After spending the fall taking online business classes, then doing a 3 month fellowship at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, ME, I seem to have lost a bit of time!
Well, on to what is new so far. I got the furnace installed. As I mentioned earlier I had wanted to install radient floor heating, but just could not justify the added cost at this time. I got a used propane force air furnace installed for less than half of what it would have cost me to do...

The photos aren’t the best, but here is my update on the Greene and Greene table. Yes I went rustic. I got thinking (think…think…think) and I became interested in translating some of the details to a rustic style. I have a very old cheap band saw so I’ve not done much re-sawing. I’ve never done a breadboard end. Notice I book matched the top. I’m using pine from an old corral and a few pine branches from my firewood pile for the legs. The pegs are well drie...

Today at lunch, my wife informed me that she would LIKE my shop to be moved out of our garage and into the barn at our cabin, 116 miles away from our house. Given that I have to live in town for my teenage boys to attend high school and me to conduct work, this puts somewhat of a damper on my future woodworking. Now to be fair, this is not a demand but an extremely strong like, which I suppose is really like a demand without an ultimatum. What a conundrum.
Here are the options I see I ...

Well, sorry I haven’t posted anything in a while. Had company for three weeks, so things are a bit behind schedule.
I decided to go with the forced air heating system. Saving almost $2,000 and not having to add to my to-do list were irresistable!
Oh the joys of dealing with someone else’s idea of “that’s OK, it’s just a barn” construction techniques!
I framed in the one door I am closing off (it will be behind my wood storage area). When I went to ...

My youngest daughter was very much into horses when she was at home. We had 14 Acres in New Jersey and probably had horses for around 15 years or so. After High School was over the horses disappeared and the horse barn became a lumber storeroom.
She got married and about 6 month ago her in-laws gave her some riding lessons as a birthday gift. The horse fever caught on again. This time she has a young daughter. For some reason girls and horses seem to go together.
Missy sometimes takes S...

A discussion about free wood led to some conversation about barn lumber. We have an old barn that came with this place, and I thought I’d share some of our efforts to keep it standing. This is not a majestic old barn built by a well-to-do country gentleman. This was built by a poor depression-era farmer out of whatever he could cobble together. Despite our efforts to keep it standing, we often have people stop by to “offer” to tear it down for us if we let them have the ...

So today I managed to pick upWhat’s this? It’s plate glass!I got it home, and a little later, after picking up some 3M-77 spray adhesive and some more sandpaper,I then got to work lapping my beat up blue marples chisel. As it turns out, the chisel has gotten WAY out of wack. Probably from my misguided attempts at lapping it in the past, but oh well, that’s why I had gotten them cheap, so I could learn without destroying something special. The pictures of the lapping and honin...

Hello everyone. Well, I’m not really big on the blog thing. Just a personal issue on my part. But this group is all about wood working and helping eachother in our craft.
The craft show season in upon us and I have been very busy making things for the show. A very simple shakers bench, nesting tables, mosaic tile table, a charging station for cell phones and other items and if I have time, a shaker shelf. I like the shaker style items for the craft show. Made simple and out of pine w...

Parabolic Works of ‘Wood Art’
....today is my moment of now, like where was yesterday when all is past, and what be-comes of foresight in tommorow, is but a shadow of finding past….
