Grab some popcorn… I made a movie!(Make sure the volume is up… it might be a little quiet)
Story:I have been working really hard to tune up my bandsaw lately. I really wanted one of these:...for tensioning and detensioning the blade. But I am at the end of my budget and can’t spend another $150. I had seen pictures of a homemade version in a magazine and decided to make my own.
I posted this to try to get ideas.
Anyway, this is what I came up with and it works gre...

Here is the last segment on my mobile workstation. Overall I’m very pleased with it, but I would definitely make some changes if I had to do it again (due mainly to my screw-ups, not a problem with the design).
First, as many of you know a typical contractor saw has a large number of gaping holes that make dust collection difficult. I used some 1/8” hardboard and magnetic vent cover sheets to block most of the holes. The back’s attached with velcro so it can be removed...

I’ve been replacing my old Craftsman style stationary tools and upgrading to more powerful brands. I’ll selling my old (21 years) Inca bandsaw on ebay. 10’ throat, cut about 6 inchs thickness
Well made by the Swiss, I’d love to keep this for a small work and use my new Grizzly for larger resaw work. I’ve been very impressed with the INCA lately. I bought a new timberwolf resaw blade and it sliced through 3” wide oak and cherry, with nice straight cu...

So I’ve been debating with my father in law about weather or not he should sell his Shopsmith setup invest in building a new shop using standard stand alone tools and machines. He’s about to retire and is kicking the idea around of either selling it or dropping another $1K into upgrading to all new Shopsmith stuff.
Personally I’ve never used the SS but I sincerely doubt I’d be a fan. Not being able to move from machine to machine would bug the hell outta me and bein...

Well I went ahead and did it. A woodworking e-mail blog stated that Laguna Driftmaster fence system for cutting veneers and I went to their web site and viewed the video.
I’ve cut veneers and thin strips of wood before, but never with a lot of accuracy. The kitchen cabinets that I made in NJ was made with Ambrosia Maple that was sawed into 1/4” slices and sanded to 5.2MM. It was then installed into a metric plywood router bit set for stile and rails.
I wanted to do something...

Somewhere, in some magazine (probably Shopnotes) I remember seeing a homemade version of the Carter Bandsaw Blade Tension Quick Release pictured here:
Does anybody know where that article is?
Can you scan and post the photo/description?
Has anyone tried this?
Does it work ok?
Is it worth the trouble?
The Carter version is about $150 bucks. I’ve reached my spending limit on my bandsaw restoration.
Thanks!

So I finally made an excuse to buy a new tool – a bandsaw to be precise. The problem is that I can not foresee a need for a heavy-duty model, nor can I justify its expense at this time. For that money, I could simply ask my wood supplier to resaw it for me for a few bucks.
I went to my local BORG and could only find mid-priced models, $400-800. This was more than I was willing to spend. Then I went to Canadian Tire, since there is currently a 1/3 off sale (thanks MsDebbieP for pointi...

Let the fun begin!
I know everyone is hoping I will just shut up and just get down to the cutting and sanding :)
BUT…..This is very important to those of you who are trying to imitate my process from beginning to end. Many of you have admitted that you have never built a box before and would like to know how to select a winning combination. So,the first bit of business is to select the wood you will be using. This decision will be based on A) what you find appealing. This is totally s...

This box required a great deal more time and care during the final sanding, mostly in trying to maintain the edge of the ridges. At first I intended to keep them as crisp as possible…which took alot of time…but I didnt care for the look afterwards. It just looked too machine made, not as organic as like.I started out with a concept of sand dunes that I thought would tie in nicely with the grain of the Myrtlewood, but thats about it.I dont try and plan out every detail of the shaping a...
