The multi-purposed 2x4 Winter 2008 #1: Roughing it out.

688 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 6 comments »

I normally spend very little time in my workshop in the winter months. The build-up to Christmas is a busy time, what with all the gifts I choose to make, and it always seemed much more appealing indoors. The ten paces through wind and rain to my ‘shop seemed such a long walk. (Here's the finished chair.) Until the Lumberjocks challenge, that is! My wife can’t believe the enthusiasm I’ve shown the last few days to get out there after breakfast, only returning when she presses t...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

691 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

Bandsawn Box #1 #1: Getting the wood ready

695 days ago by Karson | 22 comments »

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it. I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges. ...

Hall table #2: Finishing up the Thorsen Hall table

711 days ago by Karson | 16 comments »

The continuation of my Thorsen Hall table. The beginning is here My wife is happy with what is happening so far. I suggested that I try the other Greene and Greene feature that is the breadboard spline a key between the top and the breadboard end. I used a book that I bought on Greene and Greene furniture. The book is called Greene and Greene Design Elements for the Workshop by Darrell Peart published by Linden Publishing 2005. I got a piece of Blackwood 1 ¼” square and 5” long. ...

Hall table #1: A Hall table for my wife - Thorsen Variety

713 days ago by Karson | 20 comments »

My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . His table has aged some since Dave made it and it now sits in the kitchen where my wife puts her purse when she comes into the house. It’s wh...

Reviews - Tools #1: Delta Shopmaster Bandsaw - SM400 - A Budget Bandsaw

769 days ago by Dekker | 2 comments »

So I finally made an excuse to buy a new tool – a bandsaw to be precise. The problem is that I can not foresee a need for a heavy-duty model, nor can I justify its expense at this time. For that money, I could simply ask my wood supplier to resaw it for me for a few bucks. I went to my local BORG and could only find mid-priced models, $400-800. This was more than I was willing to spend. Then I went to Canadian Tire, since there is currently a 1/3 off sale (thanks MsDebbieP for pointi...

I will soon be able to again make shavings and I just got my bandsaw fixed

793 days ago by jockmike2 | 7 comments »

A couple reasons I haven’t been able to make anything lately, aside from being short on blood, is two of my important tools took a dump on me. Actually three, but we won’t talk about that. Luckily one was under contract with sears and they honored it gracefully, my band saw, and 2. I must have the luck of the Irish because my Delta 46-765X, 16 inch variable speed lathe died on me, or at least the control module did. The module is no longer manufactured or in stock by Delta or Port...

Bandsaw's bite

843 days ago by DataDoc | 22 comments »

No matter how careful you think you are, when you feel the thunk of the blade as it catches on the bone means it’s too late. I reached to brush away a cutoff and got my thumb snagged in the blade. With my wife’s assistance I got it bandaged up, and then sat around all afternoon holding my hand up to relieve the pounding in my thumb. Three Ibuprofen and 30 minutes later I had relief. Now all I feel is stupid.
