Seeking Info on homemade Bandsaw Tension Quick Release

674 days ago by Blake | 8 comments »

Somewhere, in some magazine (probably Shopnotes) I remember seeing a homemade version of the Carter Bandsaw Blade Tension Quick Release pictured here: Does anybody know where that article is? Can you scan and post the photo/description? Has anyone tried this? Does it work ok? Is it worth the trouble? The Carter version is about $150 bucks. I’ve reached my spending limit on my bandsaw restoration. Thanks!

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #7: Carving Roses wasn't very Rosie!

677 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 11 comments »

The first Rose handle I carved, didn’t give me any trouble, but I wasn’t satisfied with the light color of the sapwood. So I decided to go with the darker heartwood. I cut some rose patterns for a couple of Roses. I started carving a couple of flower petals, & snap! the flower broke off of the 3/8” stem. So I decided to go with a 1/2’’ stem, & the same thing happened, SNAP! The burly heartwood is kind of brittle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

Not Just Any Box #2: It all hinges on these..

682 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 21 comments »

I have a love affair with wooden hinges and this challenge gave me the opportunity to go one step further with them. (It started some years ago when I came across the work of the late Tim Stead – in my opinion, a genius.) Accurately drilling the hinge pin hole in such a hinge is never easy, and those I planned for this box are 9.5” long and therefore impossible to drill. The following is an attempt to show how I overcame this bit of the challenge. The first shot shows the oak blan...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #6: Carving drawer handles

682 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

Yesterday afternoon, I shifted my gears into the carving mode I decided to make drawer handles, & decided that a small rose would look kind of nice. Actually, to tell you the truth, I had made that decision when first designing the box.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~First I picked out a piece of cut off, & drill 3 holes with my plug cutter. These plugs will later be used to hold the rose while caving, & also for fastening to the drawer front. ...

Not Just Any Box #1: Preparing the Way

683 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 14 comments »

I’d been living with this board of burr / burl or pippy oak in the workshop for five or six years and must have picked it up and put it back down at least a hundred times (approx!). I have done quite a few boxes in the past with lids something like this: but I always intended that this piece would be used in a different way, and for something a little bit special. Though I’ve made many boxes, I have never thought of doing one for me, so this challenge presents an opportunity. ...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #5: Making the drawer

684 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 10 comments »

This afternoon I went out, started working on the drawer. It sure felt good to be back in the shop again. This really helps shorten the winter. Who cares about going South with the birds, when you have a nice warm shop.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I adjusted the bandsaw table, sawed the ends to about 3/8” thick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Then I taped a tapered cut off to the heart, so I could get a 90 degre...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #4: A few more pictures

685 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 15 comments »

I finished sanding the exterior portion of the box down to 320 grit. Then applied one coat of mineral oil. Boy did that make the grain standout. I used Mineral Oil because it has no affect on Barb’s allergies. Otherwise it would have to stay out in my shop for a month. The dimensions are, Height = 8” Width = 7” Depth = 4” I’ll add some beeswax, for the final coats. Now to finish making the drawer. The back & front will be entirely diffe...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #3: More of My "Not just any box"

687 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 18 comments »

Well I got a little more accomplished. I did a little design change today, I removed what I called the chin at the bottom side of the heart. I held a piece of stiff sand paper, & drew a cutting line, then proceeded cut off the chins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Note; the cut off line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A big improvement with no chins. I call this “Wooden surgery.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #2: The start of my, "Not any kind of box"

689 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

I said I wasn’t going to enter, but I opened up the latest issue of “Woodworkers Journal,” They had a centerfold of how to make a bandsawn box. I read it over, & right away I thought, there’s something I can try, & make one for the L J’s contest. I’ve never tried making a bandsawn box before, & besides that, it would be a good test for my new Rikon. I’ve had these nice blocks of burly maple that I picked up at our local city pa...
