Hey everybody, after a few personal messages here is my version of a how to on a Drunken Checker Board. I of coarse bow to the Chairman of the Board and pay tribute with beer. This is a Off-Checker pattern I call “Drunken Alice in Wonderland” The “serendipitous” nature of this piece is appealing in a far out sort of way. Here Goes…
So first I prepare the Material. I am using Hard Maple and Walnut both are surfaced flat and cut 1” x 9” x 14&...

I have a love affair with wooden hinges and this challenge gave me the opportunity to go one step further with them. (It started some years ago when I came across the work of the late Tim Stead – in my opinion, a genius.) Accurately drilling the hinge pin hole in such a hinge is never easy, and those I planned for this box are 9.5” long and therefore impossible to drill. The following is an attempt to show how I overcame this bit of the challenge.
The first shot shows the oak blan...

Some of you may remember that late last year, and into early this year, I built a band saw. Since then, I have really put it through it’s paces. That thing is a beast and has taken anything I have thrown at it without so much as a grumble. In addition to that, it has proved to be more precise than the several factory made band saws I have owned. Now, the thing is, I built this saw in conjunction with a good friend of mine. Most of the work was done at my shop. My friend took his back to ...

Today marked the beginning of a joint Mississippi lumberjocks project….
For now, I just want to take a moment and ask that if anyone happens to figure out what the project is, please don’t spoil the fun and post what it is…..
So, after a bit of delay on KTMM’s part….. (SWMBO hit him with a honeydo list), he was finally able to make it to William’s shop. SuperDav721 beat him getting there….
The three started the project out with a cup (or thr...

Gluing veneer to hardwood can actually be a good thing. As long as the hardwood has the proper moisture content, which is between 6 to 8 percent. Also, the smaller the piece of hardwood the better. Wood only expands and contracts, the width of your board. Also I like to veneer both sides, to balance the hardwood.
In the old days when furniture reached a zenith in Europe, between 1700-1900. Most of the highest quality pieces of furniture had veneer glued to the legs & aprons, which were...

I recently purchased a 16” jointer planer combo and 18” 3000 Series Bandsaw from Laguna Tools. It has turned into my worst nightmare. I have spent $6,245.83 on this order. It arrived damaged and I properly noted it on the freight bill. I contacted laguna about the most obvious damage to the band saw. The upper flywheel had come apart in shipping. I rebuilt it and it seems to work fine now.
My nightmare starts really with the jointer. In short this machine should edge join using...

THE ART OF NOT TAKING A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!Yesterday I awoke out of my daze of admiring a quilted maple block with a shocking sensation and blood everywhere. The dull blade on my bandsaw did not help and using my hands to push the beautiful block through didn’t help either.
Simple word of advise which many of you can attest too.
Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick! Lets say it all together now!
