Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Gluing veneer to hardwood can actually be a good thing. As long as the hardwood has the proper moisture content, which is between 6 to 8 percent. Also, the smaller the piece of hardwood the better. Wood only expands and contracts, the width of your board. Also I like to veneer both sides, to balance the hardwood.

Story:I have been working really hard to tune up my bandsaw lately. I really wanted one of these:...for tensioning and detensioning the blade. But I am at the end of my budget and can’t spend another $150. I had seen pictures of a homemade version in a magazine and decided to make my own.

This project is not technically finished so I will not post as a project..This part of the blog will deal with the cutting of arcs.I basically used one of the patron jigs I developed to cut the end curves for a Baguette Board…this pivots on the circle cutting jig. Cut two lengths of contrasting or complimentary timbers… I of course chose Purple Heart and Silver Ash…Silver Ash and Tasmanian Blackwood would have also been suitable… But if all you have is Walnut and Curl...

I opened the shed door the other day, & discovered water on the floor.
I had just made a new shed door about a year ago. I thought the wind had blown water in from under the door.
Then I noticed sawdust on the floor with drip marks coming from above.
I looked up, & saw some funny looking white stuff coating the ceiling up in the corner above the
door. The top plate of the wall studs also had piles of sawdust on it, & ants galore!

This board is not part of the 150.. I showed one of the 150 to a friend and she wanted one but a little larger,This is the way it was made.Cut some bits of board. NGR SA TBDress all sides.This is to see the way it will look with the stripe. You will need 12 pieces of timber roughly 5’’ by 12’’ whatever thickness you want. [ I milled mine to 5/8”]The first one I made was PH and SA—6 of each.Place timber in the jig and cut the first arc.Move the piece into the fence, clamp and make the second arc cut.
Repeat 12 times.Glue it up and cut it into a circle.Put on a little tung oil finishThats about It.
