Huge Estate Sale - 300+ Planes!

01-22-2013 03:31 AM by grfrazee | 2 comments »

This past weekend there was an estate sale in Ottawa, IL. The owner of the estate apparently was a huge tool collector, because there were more planes on sale there than I’ve ever seen in my life. For example, the owner had five No. 113s, at least five #12s, more block and bench planes than I could keep track of, and the ever elusive and ever-so-tiny Stanley #1. Since I’ve been looking for a few things, I figured I might as well make the 1:15 drive from Downers Grove and ...

Tools #1: Disston D8's and Warrented Superior logging saw..

07-15-2012 10:39 PM by GlennsGrandson | 0 comments »

I picked up two Disston D-8 handsaws with thumbhole at an auction today. $27.50 for about 12 saws. Two which were these Disston and one smaller one had a Warranted Superior button (not pictured). I took these three saws, filtered through the rest and a lady (the one who bid me up) bought the rest of them from me for $3 (I didn’t want the rest of the garbage). They are pretty rough shape. The one with the painted handle has a decent etching under the rust yet. From the website http://www...

Exercises in Artisanship #5: Handles, auctions, and progress

04-10-2012 11:38 PM by jjw5858 | 7 comments »

Well folks a little more progress slowly coming into form on the maple handle design. Once more continuing to go about my shop efforts in a relaxed yet challenging pace. Shorter creative bursts giving forth an hour here or even a half hour there. I seem to leave the shop more satisfied knowing a more quality effort is being put into it all. The learning is actually becoming more than the old 3 hours straight and making various things with a mind almost in total fast forward mode with tools...

Auction antique tools success

03-22-2012 06:50 PM by YorkshireStewart | 16 comments »

I popped into the viewing for an auction of assorted paraphernalia last week and left a bid on a box of tools, as I couldn’t get back for the auction itself. A cast iron shooting plane had caught my eye in this mixed box. It’s a long way from being a Lie Nielsen or a Stanley, but it looked like one I could clean up and use. I ‘won’ the lot for GBP40 / $63 (surprise surprise, it went for my maximum bid!). However I’m happy with that even though there was a h...

Beltsville, Maryland - Cabinet Maker Closing Shop - Auctioning all Tools

02-21-2012 05:39 PM by McLeanVA | 2 comments »

First, let me say that I am absolutely i no way affiliated with this auction or the seller. A friend of mine sent me the link because he knows I like woodworking tools and saw the shop that was closing happened to be somewhat near me. Looks like a pretty giant selection of tools. Everything from big power tools to a few hand tools. I’m not really in the market for anything at the moment, but figured I’d share this in case your deal hounds were looking to score a tool or two....

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure: Items to Build for Fundraiser #1: What items to build for fundraising auction?

06-16-2010 12:28 AM by Jonathan | 13 comments »

My wife will be traveling out to San Diego in the middle of November to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk. In order to be an entrant, she has to raise several thousand dollars through donations. One of her coworkers is planning a fundraising event to be held at a local restaurant sometime next month. There will be an auction at the event, with all the proceeds going directly to the walkathon. I would like to build a few things that can be auctioned-off to help ra...

Woodworking For A Good Cause

01-18-2010 02:34 AM by Todd A. Clippinger | 18 comments »

My wife, Rita, manages a daily program that keeps adults with developmental disabilities busy. She works personally with these individuals and we see first hand how this program enriches the lives of the participants and their families. Most of them are affected by down syndrome. We choose to support this program every year with donations for the fundraising auction. This year I donated the red bamboo sofa table. This was originally made with the intention of it being a donation. ...
