After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started.
The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make.
Stock selection: you need to have a good contrast between the different woods used. The wood selected should also be hard woods, but not necessarily too hard. OAK, ...

Welcome.Where do I start, at the beginning I suppose, I was born at an …..sorry not that far back!Ok let do this. [ I will be using imperial measurements throughout this blog..mainly ‘cause all wood working should be in imperial not metric! IMHO anyway]
To start :Select the timber you will be making this here crazy board out of. For me this was Silver Ash and Tassie Blackwood as they contrast and compliment each other. I also decide to usesome purple heart as an accent.

This project is not technically finished so I will not post as a project..This part of the blog will deal with the cutting of arcs.I basically used one of the patron jigs I developed to cut the end curves for a Baguette Board…this pivots on the circle cutting jig. Cut two lengths of contrasting or complimentary timbers… I of course chose Purple Heart and Silver Ash…Silver Ash and Tasmanian Blackwood would have also been suitable… But if all you have is Walnut and Curl...

NOTE All of my photos have been migrated to a new provider, and the links in my posts are likely out of date. You can find the photos here.
My old crosscut sled sucked. I made it before I acquired a lot of knowledge, but I’ve been dragging along with it for a while. I did some test cuts the other day, and realized just how out of shape it was, so I decided it was time for a new one.
So here comes the Cross Cut Sled Journey!
I decided I wanted a fence with a T groove on it, s...

Friends With Benefits…
OK guys it’s not what you think. But the benefit here are specs for the entry table that I made. One of the LJ brothers asked if he could build the entry table as a gift and I thought I would share it with everyone. I am keeping his identity secret lest I give him away to someone that he would be intending to surprise.
In The Rough…
These are not professionally drawn plans, but they will do. This is a simple project and all the specs are t...

I’m in the process of building a new workbench based on Bob Lang's bench as detailed in the October 2008 issue of Popular Woodworking. I’ve read Christopher Schwarz book “Workbenches: From Design And Theory To Construction And Use” as well as several others. It always seemed like I wanted a combination of the features I found in most other benches. Bob Langs design was the first I’d seen that incorporated everything I wanted in a bench, so here goes!
I bou...

I have spent the last few days in the workshop working out how to make this jig.. and have it durable and repeatable and totally accurate and easy to use.Actually this jig can be used for two different projects … well probably more that two but thats all I have used it for so far.To start, I had to build a table to go over the bandsaw table for the jig to pivot on. [double pivot actually][two pivots two pics right!! ]The table was made from 5/8” [15mm] plywood, with silver ash us...

Next step is to make the ends of the segments curved. Shell-like if you want. For that we need a new jig.. Yeah I know some of you haven’t finished the first one..!This is ultra simple.Firstly a fresh piece of ply .. 1/4 ” is fine.I inserted a bearing to make this more durable .. same same as last one. This was positioned 4.5 ” from the end[centred on the width] and an arc cut on the end via the circle cutting jig.. same same.Cut two fences same as the one of the first jig ...

This isn’t much of a blog, but here are some drawings (for those who were interested) with the dimensions for the guitar stand I posted a few weeks ago.
