The following is an addition to The Apprentice and The Journeyman woodworking video series, Let’s Build.
The dedicated dado sled for the table saw is a highly versatile woodworking shop fixture that can expand the woodworking approaches used by many woodworkers. Dado blades are used on the table saw instead of a typical saw blade and the dado blades are often said to be “stacked.” This term implies that the dado blades, chippers, and shims are combined to create a cert...

This is in response to a viewer, Helluvawreck who had questions concerning what turning tools were used during the video of the Salt and Pepper Mills.
Thoughts:1. Turning salt and pepper mills is essentially spindle turning.2. Due to the length of your wood lathe you may need to bore out on your larger lathe, the drill press, or carefully by hand. However, you may be very well able to bore out on your Jet lathe.3. You can start out with this wood project and you will do fine. Suggestion...

There is something special about wood turning. It is easy to spend hours at this wood craft while working with the various woodturning tools. This particular project features salt and pepper mills of black walnut with a food-safe finish of Tried and True oil varnish. This finish leaves a soft and warm patina with a nice hand rubbed look and feel.
The material on hand in the shop happened to be 3/4” black walnut that was left over from another project. In this case the (4) pieces w...

I know this is a little out of order but I needed to get started on these desks ahead of the garbage can containers. What is great about these desks is that we will be using different kinds of joinery. We’ll be laminating the legs, pocket hole joinery for the aprons and top. Plus there will be some edge banding happening too. You will also see how I build my drawer boxes and the material that I use for this in future episodes. Don’t forget to sign up for Huck’s (hucksdi...

One of the beautiful aspects of woodworking is that there are so many facets to the craft. Marquetry is one of these woodworking crafts that requires just basic woodworking tools and is well with the reach for all of us. The primary shop tools used for this wood project are the scroll saw, table saw, and the band saw. The hardwoods selected for this project came from a number of wood species that were in the scrap bin. Selected woods for this woodworking project include hickory, maple,...

Once the banding segments are organized we can now focus on creating the interior design. We’ll need a few outer rippings that will sandwich the segments together and keep them in alignment. You’ll notice in the picture that the outer hardwoods are walnut and maple glued together. In this case the walnut will be on the inside with the maple on the outside. The reason for this is to create contrasting colors within the banding and also with the mahogany picture frames that will...

Has there ever been a time when you saw a wood banding design inlaid into a table, jewelry box, or picture frame and you asked yourself the question “How did they create the banding?” I did too. Fortunately, about two years ago I came across a video on Woodtreks and it was there that I witnessed a craftsman form Orion Woodworks that explained the process of this particular banding design. The following is my interpretation.
Pictured above is the look that I’m after. N...
