I love Mission style furniture and am working on my first piece, a couch table that will be used as an aquarium stand. I’m trying to take my time with this one, it gets worked on a little at a time in between some of my smaller projects.
The table is red oak from HD. I don’t have a planer yet so I needed to buy lumber that was close to size and fairly finished. I want to try somethung in quarter sawn white oak next.
I just finished one side of the table and wanted to post...

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood.
They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left.
I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

I have to say setting up a wood shop is just as much work and cash, if not more, then setting up a steel shop. Luckily a few of the steel tools are useful and will come in handy to the wood shop. I have also a few tools from a set of cedar drafting drawers I built oh, 5 years back. It was a one time thing and at the time living in an apartment, dust was every where. All I really had was a Dewalt biscuit joiner and a random orbital sander, that was it.
A pic of the cedar drawers, mmmm they ...

Well I think I am finally done with the design of this piece. I made a change last night which is actually a regression to an earlier model. I like this change. I have reversed the rails and stiles on the door construction making the stiles be the horizontal member. I read an entry on this site the other day regarding this technique. Sorry I can’t remember who to credit it to. Anyway, Here are two jpeg exports to compare. I think the new arrangement gives the table a low and wide...

Hi All,
Here’s a tip to use the sawdust that you accumulate. It has to be mostly ‘pure’ sawdust for this project.
My wife makes candles and after pouring batches she has some leftover wax – usually colored and scented. We toss all that together and when it gets to be a decent amount we can make our own firestarters.
It’s prettty simple and there are naturally variations.
But essentially you melt the wax and add sawdust until you get a sludge consist...

Hi All,
I posted some details and pics of my workshop today as well as some projects.
I completed my first project recently – a headbaord for our guest bedroom. I’ve made some picture frames and working on a more ‘deluxe’ picture frame now.
I’m going to need to jump in and look for some answers soon, the questions are starting to pile up!.
