Part 3updated 1/15/12
Regarding size:Size and proportions are important…to a point. We will be building a box that will start out at 11 1/8 W x 7 D x 4 1/2 H. (After shaping it will finish out at about 3 7/8’’ 10 3/4’’ x 6 3/4’’ x depending on how much shaping is done.)
I like the proportions of this box, they just look good to my eye. They are loosely based on the Golden Ratio which is a ratio of 1.618. There is much more to it than that, but simply put, here is how it works in rela...

Hey everyone,
I was asked by a few of you from my blog “How to find legal burls” “once I get them how do I cut the burls”?
Well I just made a short vidio on how I cut to the burl in the context of a bowl or hollow form blank.
Please coment and add if I don’t cover it well. If you not want to go thru the hassle of finding and cutting your own you can alway buy from me. LOLThanksGreg
Thanks Todd on the tip for getting the video on this post.

Hey everyone,I am in need of some help! I am writing a book called “The Burl Hunter”. I am looking for interested people who are willing to read as I write to help me out. I am not a great writer but I love to teach.
What I would like to do is get about 5 people to read and critique the book. Even edit my grammar. I would like 2 people who know about burls just to keep me in check and 3 to just read to learn and see how it flows. I need your input.
It is a book that will g...

Watch the woodworking how to video clip to learn how simple & easy it can be to make dead on cuts every time. The woodworking lessons in the YouTube video are simple, yet profound. It’s all about quality & the efficiency of each cut made in the shop.
A stop block is essential to great woodworking. The stop is basic & fundamental to both woodworking and carpentry. Beginning woodworkers may have a tendency to measure each cut before it is made even though all the cuts to ...

Now we need to cut a recess in the lid for the medallion to set down into.DONT cut your medallion until you have routed out the home for it.I typically make the medallion about 1” to 1.5” smaller on all sides than the lid depending on the box size and the piece of wood I have for the medallion.
We are now going to make a simple jig for a router to set on and run back and forth making several passes of incrementally deeper cuts. There are a several ways to do ...

I am laying out the legs now to accept the panels and railsThis is where the center stile will fit into the top and bottom rail. The tenons are only 1/4” and the panels will float in the rails and stiles. The strength that holds the sides together will be from the rails, the top and bottom shelf which will be 3/8” X 1 1/4” tenons pined from the legs.
