Selling Your Crafts & Art on the Internet: My new Strategy with Crosslinked Lumberjocks & Etsy.com

316 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 30 comments »

There is an ongoing debate about whether Lumberjocks should be the focus of a marketing plan by professional woodworkers. There are quite a few professionals on this site now, all of us trying to make a living. I define “professional” as someone that makes all, or most of their income from their woodworking and craft work. Selling something once in a while from your hobby work really has nothing in common with “having” to sell something every day to buy food and s...

Relief Carving My Birger Sandzen-Inspired Desk Door Panel, A step-by-Step Log.

781 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

I hesitate to do this, that which I am about to do. I don’t fancy myself as a good carver, or a great picture drawer. Especially with so many lumberjocks that are great carvers here that will see this. On top of that, there are so many great carvers on the internet that will stumble onto this blog because they surf the net. With that said, after Mark Mazzo asked about the process I go through to do a carved panel like this one, I thought about it for awhile, and decided to show th...

"Visual Imagination" --by RusticWoodArt

850 days ago by frank | 8 comments »

Visual Imagination ….so the lighting and thunder clap their hands, a leaf falls to the ground sending forth vibrations of welcome, an ant crawls out from under that leaf in the light of day, and i stare just knowing that all ‘just is’ as should be…. —-from my place of silence in these wooded fields of dreams, comes an-other much like my-self seeking repose, after all what use is body or soul confined to theological debate, when by the spirit one learns to d...

"Wordy Wooder" by RusticWoodArt

729 days ago by frank | 7 comments »

Wordy Wooder ....being born this way with a head filled full of words, and then next came the realization that my hands were created, to give expression to the images that swirled around within, while playing the part of verbal misfit, until the day my morning opened up and I saw wood…. One ought to ask them-selves first of all, who-what-where-when and how do I fit in? Without asking these questions that same one will fall prey, to all the other’s coming along and across one...

So you want to go pro #7: Pinky Up You Artists

688 days ago by odie | 4 comments »

Let me explain this small delay. I work at an art gallery one day a month. You know these places don’t you? People sip their tea with their pinky up in the air there. You lugs would never fit in there LIKE I DO. “You do my ass”, you are to saying to yourself. What tipped you off? My stuff doesn’t hang on a wall? If that doesn’t mean anything to you, start at the beginning of this series. This is an artists’ co-op. Does your community have an artists’ co-op? Admit it, do you even know? This...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #4: "Evolution and 'Wood Art' in the Process" --by RusticWoodArt

746 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

Evolution and ‘Wood Art’ in the Process ”Show me an artist, who has not had to hack his own way through the cluttered groundwork of those who came before and I will show you one who does not know yet their beginning to ending.” ....and so I’m taking some time out, to write some more notes and thoughts here, as I sift through those cascading files within my mind, looking for ‘original idea’….for the ”Upcoming Awards Event” Category: Not...

"Art-Full Color" --by RusticWoodArt

764 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

Art-Full Color Color that is felt, is in essence the pigments of shadowed hues brought to life, by an imaginative handwork, of the artist…. —-all creation awaits the expression of color, that the artist feels rising up within his//her makeup, and so when color explodes with strokes of warmth or coldness, there is the drawing or expelling of those who come to watch. —-color was never created to just be watched, but to be felt! —-it is in the feeling of color...

random #13: Bryan Nash Gill's Hemlock Relief Print

222 days ago by Gary Fixler | 1 comment »

Artist Bryan Nash Gill has created a series of 12 prints in the traditional block printing style by inking the cross section of a very large stump of hemlock – from the mill next door to him – and then hand-rubbing large sheets of handmade paper into all the growth rings. The prints look beautiful, but at $4k/ea., I think I’ll make my own ;) Now to find a 3.5’ diameter chunk of hemlock… Some shots of the creation process[via Craftzine] And as way leads on t...
