Plans for Making A Wooden Hoola Hoop for a 7 Year Old Girl - By Rachel DeCou

437 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 33 comments »

This blog entry today is somewhat woodworking related, and the content has mostly been provided by my daughter Rachel, a student of woodworking, at least in the way I do woodworking. She’s been hanging out in the shop all afternoon since the grade school decided to call off school today because the Cottonwood River was up so high, cutting off roads around the County today. I’m enjoying her presence in the shop, but I hope the water is down tomorrow so she can learn something w...

A Bit of Rambling about a Beautiful Sunny Day, and Being Bummed Out about A Stolen Knife

443 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

I awoke this morning to a dreary, cold, very foggy day. I don’t mind fog, my morning commute to work is only about 40 feet behind the house, and a little fog doesn’t slow me down much walking out there. Actually, it is mornings like this that I’m reminded how much I have to be thankful for. Back in the days when I had to commute by car 87 miles to Wichita, a foggy morning like this one was a real burden, even treacherous. I always write on the calendar when we have ...

A New Persective on my Business; A Hot Air Balloon Tour of the Kansas Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie

483 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 27 comments »

(I haven’t done this style of blogging for awhile. With so many new LJ’ers now on this website, I’ve figured most of us don’t want to see these long-winded-folksy style, non-woodworking, rambling, style blogs anymore. But, this is a story about “Hot Air”, so I’ll let a bunch out along with the photos.) This blog could easily be subtitled: ”Facing Your Fears with Hot Air.”Read on further to find out why. July 29th, 2008: I wa...

Progression Photos on the "The Greatest Story Ever Told" Walking Cane Project

510 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

Realizing that the story and photos of this walking cane project are decidedly Christian in content, if you are offended by such things, you should read another Blog. This project is a cane that I was commissioned to build, which tells the story of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and will be used to talk about the customer’s faith as he uses the symbols to tell the story. I hope that if you are offended by the content, that you will at least enjoy the woodworking process that is...

Planning "Steps" for a Carved Story Stick, "The Gospel" Commissioned Walking Cane

541 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 9 comments »

My recent lumberjock postings of the walking cane work I have done recently has brought a lot of interest from folks wanting me to build them special, unique, elaborately detailed, walking canes and sticks. This new blog communicates the design process on one cane as I prepare to start the carving, and get approvals on the final design. The customer is a Youth Pastor, and needs to use a tall walking cane to support a bad knee. He and I have been designing this project for several weeks...

Trying my big hairy hands at Silversmithing Work, first photos of my 4th project

574 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

I think it is really important to constantly try to learn new things. Could just be my ADHD. But, I’m too old for medications, so I take on new things to learn to keep my mind freed-up from boredom. I just don’t like doing anything the same, more than once, or twice. And, I’ve been trying to find ways to make a niche for myself in the vast internet woodworking world. To that end, I try unique crafts, and do cross-discipline, mixed-media work, in the hopes that my work...
