I have been resisting buying a Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for at least the last year. I have a great Sliding Compound Miter Saw, Router, and Table Saw. The only operation that seemed to be quick with a RAS that I could not easily do with the tools I have is making cross cuts using a dado set.
Last week Blake posted a project where he did a wonderful job restoring a 1959 DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. I really loved the job he did. Sunday afternoon I was browsing Craigslist and saw an ad for a saw si...

I recieved the second Plough plane from the UK in the mail today. This one is the little sister of the Record 044 I showed in my last blog entry. This one is a small plough plane made by record and imitated by a couple of other manufactures including Marples. This plane is useful for quickly making groves in boards for drawers and similar applications.
Let me introduce the Record 043 to you. I’m show it next to my Lie-Nielson low angle block plane to give you a sense of scale. I...

This week I came up with this axle and wheels from an old antique wagon. I have another set of wheels I found previously, but they don’t match this new set.
I am just scratching my head about what to do with them. I know they are good for something, and something really cool, I just don’t know what yet.
Last Spring, I was trying to figure out how to do a backdrop set for a Cowboy VBS program, and the jocks sure came to my aide.
So, I thought, “why not ask the lumb...

Yesterday was the monthly antique sale here in Sacramento and my daughter and I went shopping. It is a good family outting. I’ve gotten in the habit of sharing what I find on these outings, so here are photos of this months finds. I try to purchase things that I can use and avoid collecting for collecting’s sake. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes I am not.
I have been looking for a jeweler’s frame saw for a while. They are useful for handcutting dove tails. I&...

Today I visited a few antique stores in a couple of small towns near Sacramento. I thought I would share what I found. In addition to a few tools I found some woodworking books including a copy of Graham Blackburn’s “Illustrated Encyclopedia of Woodworking Handtools Instruments and Devices”.
Without further adieu here are the tools….
A craftsman backsaw, two bronze spokeshaves, and a buck brothers chisel.
I belive these are bronze and may be home ma...

My dad, Ralph Kent, Disney’s keeper of the mouse, passed last year. He was an artist, a designer of uncountable products, a lover of games, a terrible punster, and a collector of mammoth proportion.
His chess set collection alone took up an entire spare bedroom. I mean stacked floor to ceiling with squeezeways to access them. He only could display maybe twenty or thirty at a time. They, along with his collections of other games (some dating to the fifteenth century), Disney memorabil...

Below the coffered panels are the skirt panels. These were in better shape than the coffered panels and had a “rope” mould along the top edge. The rope mould was mostly new construction, ( poorly done ) and was replaced with new mould that I ran and distressed. It started to look like this was at least the second installation of these panels because some of them were cobbled together and mis-matched. It became easy to find where they originally belonged, because their length match...

We did not have enough space to layout the entire room on the floor, so once I got a sense of how things went together, I measured everything, assigned a number to each one of the parts and plotted all the pieces on the computer. Much easier to drag around and piece the puzzle together. (also much less likely to break some very old and brittle wood) 17th century meets 21st century. :)
Some of the notes appear below.

Then a rough draft layout by our designer. (click to enlarge)

We never thought at the time to chronicle this project with photos, so I will try to muddle through with the few I have. I wish we got a photo of the pile of lumber and panels when they arrived in our trailer, but I can tell you that the site of them caused me to think – - &$#)@ WHAT ARE WE DOING !!!!—- :)
Below are some shots of some parts layed out on the floor in an attempt to make some sense of it all. Click on the photo to get a full size view.
Above is an attempt t...
