This is the blog that I promised detailing my experiments in what I call “watercolor style” aniline dying. My sincere hope is that it will encourage some of you to jump in and help develop what I think is a huge potential of which I’ve only scratched the surface.

The next box in the series Oops!, A Llittle Cabinetree, and now Facets is on the build. It had to be started because I’ve been obsessing too much on the finish of Cabinetree and in order to amuse myself between coats I had been so bored I had started making micro plywood and then micro boxes and banding. When it comes to building boats, I guess after 30 years of it I am a professional, but as a hobby woodworker I’m pretty new. Boatbuilding has given me lots of skills and abilities with tools but the scale of projects and the individual manual skills required to make small cabinets and art furniture are totally different. I have had numerous requests for a how to blog about my dyeing techniques.
I use water base aniline dyes. This technique the dye is applied using 20 cent sponge brushes and cheap paper towels. I typically work from the darkest colors to the lightest, creating layers of color.
This piece is turned from fiddle back maple. My apologies for not taking a photograph prior to applying any dyes.
