Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #11: Wednesday Special — Tribute Tour of Karson's Shop

428 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

This week it’s a repeat visit to Karson's shop. You may remember that Debbie visited Karson's long ago in the early forum version of the tour, exhibiting her mountain goat-like scaling abilities while inspecting Karson’s incredible collection of lumber. This tour is a recognition of Karson’s contributions to Lumberjocks. Yes, Karson was one of the pioneer members of LJs, with nearly 500 days of membership logged. Here he is at the beginning with our founder and several of...

Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #6: Tuesdays with Schroeder (and company)

464 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

We are off to Oregon to visit Schroeder's shop. The Gnarly Wood Shoppe is a man’s shop (well actually two to three and a dog, according to the sign). From the taxidermy to the office art, it’s pretty clear that this is a manly environment. And this is what they make there. The über table and the über Thorsten side table. I’ve made jewelry boxes that took days to make that don’t come up to that drawer. And that book-matched crotch-grained top, breadbo...

Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #5: Tuesdays with Mot

471 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 10 comments »

This week it’s a return to Mot’s shop. Sure we visited Mot in the early days, before things got more organized. But that was a social call, and this is, after all the more serious matter of an inspection. MsDebbieP likes the ambient dust filtration, the tight organization and the lighting. I was excited by the Cat5 cabling and shopcam. For a small shop, there are all the necessary tools and some very high-tech toys. Mot has been experimenting with a lathe instruction ser...

474 days ago by Karson | 16 comments »

OK Bob and I got together today to have a training class on Raised Panel construction. See Bob blog on Mortise and Tenon - Help Needed #1 We forgot to take pictures through the process. #2 He forgot half of his wood at home. #3 We couldn’t find enough pieces to make 1 full door so we looked through my Popular stash and found a 12” piece that would give him the required 9” piece. #4 We cut my popular to get it to the correct size. Then we found a way to get it ...

Proud of my Buddy #1: First attempt at carving

475 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 28 comments »

Hi all; I always mention my buddy Bruce, and here’s a post dedicated to him, (even though he’s still alive) knock on wood. He has no experience in wood carving, other to set a hinge or something. When we were building the Philadelphia Pie Crust Table, he would work on parts like turning the post, laying out the pattern for the top, as well as cutting it out and hollowing the middle of it with a router. The 1 inch thick board becomes about 5/8 inch in the middle are...

Arts and Crafts Style Pool Table - Video Series #5: Corbels for the leg system

483 days ago by John Nixon | 5 comments »

A couple of weeks ago I Blogged for help here at LumberJocks (Link Here) with what size / shape /scale to make the corbels for the Pool Table. It was a great discussion and also a nice collaborative process with all who participated. There’s a great group of woodworkers from all skill levels here, and it was nice to hear to various viewpoints. The corbels are finished, and I think they came out great. The next installment in the video series covers the design and construction of t...

Jigs #2: Multi Position Jigs

485 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 17 comments »

Making better use of you time includes making jigs that can be used in different ways, or positions. The first series of photos show the jig used to cut the dovetail slot into the post, to receive the legs. This had a knob to tighten to prevent the post from spinning. The second set of photos were the jig for carving the post. This too, proved to be very helpful. It has boards on the back side that fit snugly over my bench top, while held tight in the vise. On the e...

Jigs #1: Templates and Jigs

486 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 16 comments »

Templates and Jigs Whenever we do a project that has the potential to be built again, or if the design is somewhat difficult, we’ll spend the time to build a jig. This is a process that pays back big dividends, and has been practiced for hundreds of years. In the first instance, it makes sense to speed up the process of duplicating it. This prevents you from having to record all the dimensions and engineering that went into the piece. A very big time saver. In the second ...

Another design design for the pool table

490 days ago by John Nixon | 7 comments »

I’m back for some more design advice. The discussion / feedback on the corbels was great, and I thank all who participated. Next topic for design consideration is the addition of a stretcher between the legs on the pool table. Some things that are up in the air: Whether to add a stretcher or not. The legs are stout enough that I don’t need it for stability, so it’s purely asthetic. If a stretch is added, should I do a through tenon look where the stretcher comes ...
