How to find and harvest legal burls!

1314 days ago by OregonBurls | 37 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

16 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 5 comments »

When a viewer sent me a comment asking if I could make a First Aid Cabinet for the workshop, I thought to myself. “Yea what a perfect project to do”, because I am setting up the new shop, and it was the one thing missing. Drying Burl Wood #1: Drying Domestic Burl Wood: Consideration #1

265 days ago by OregonBurls | 5 comments »

Hey to all you LJs, Consideration #1 I thought that I would start a series on drying green domestic burl wood. With burl wood the end grain is going every direction and is under more internal pressure thus making it want to self destruct. Green burls or straight grain have two places where water finds its home. Inside the cells and outside the cells, this is called bound water (inside the cells) and free water (outside the cell walls). Free water is easier to escape than the bound wa...

Greene and Greene Curio Cabinet #4: Carcase glue up

371 days ago by DynaBlue | 3 comments »

I have been busy working on the cabinet, trying to make the most of the two weeks I took off work to get done as much as I could accomplish. The carcase has now been glued up, a process that consisted of several stages in order to simplify assembly. The stages I used were: (1) Cloud lifts; (2) Drilling shelf holes; (3) Carcase sides; (4) Door divider into front stretchers; (5) Web frame; (6) Final carcase glueup. Since I hand cut all the tenons there were inevitable small gaps wher...

Drying Burl Wood #2: Consideration #2 By OregonBurls

264 days ago by OregonBurls | 3 comments »

Consideration #2 If you have fruit tree burls or burls like madrone there are two ways you can semi-stabilize the burl.1. Pressure cook the block:a. I have a friend in New York who gets 12×12 x 6 blocks of Madrone and when he gets them the first thing he does is throws them in the pressure cooker for one hour.b. Let the water cool down until you can comfortably take the blocks out with your hands. Then re-wax them until ready to turn the bloc...
