Ok, turnings is done and now the post has been mounted on the Legacy and set up to do the reeding on the top portion of the post. Stops have been set up for the reeding and the proper bit has been installed in the router.
I’ll be using a bit with a bearing to do the reeding, its a 3/16 radious. It also has a five inch long shank which allows it to reach the center of the turning.

It took about 15 mins to get the post on the lathe and get the pattern set and things set just right. So how its ready to let the chips fly and they do fly. I turn the lathe up full speed and go at it.
The orginal post is 6 1/4” in dia. I decided to go ahead and use its diameter for the new turning. So the new turning will be 6 1/4 dia. to 2 1/2” dia. at its smallest point and its 33 1/4” long. Total turning time with the duplicator to rough it out 10 mins.

Well, I got a call from a developer we do finish trim design and installs for and he asked me to contact the new owner of one of the homes they built that we did all the finish trim inside. Got a chance to snap a few more pics real quick so I thought I’d add them to the blog. Heres the DiningRoom Pillars, I thought they needed a crown head but the owner wanted to be cheap…sigh..

I am an “Urban Logger”. I only mill trees from town. There is a reason for this. I am a tree hugger (yea really) Not the stereotype, insert your own mental picture here, that have given that title a negative connotation. BUT, I do love trees. I think they are magnificent. Below are some pics of a tool box that I made a couple of years back. The wood is alder. This tool box was built to hold a large amount of electrical tools. One day when I was working on top of a high lift the box rolled off of the platform and droped about 10 feet onto a concreet floor. I expected to find it in pieces with 30 pounds of tools scattered about. What I found was an intact tool box with only a couple of cracks in the lid. Wow I thought, finger joints sure are strong. Saturday was the day. Mr. Dorje came over with the tools and know-how, I provided assistance when able. We spent about seven hours, milling five logs each between six an eight feet long, and about 26” in diameter.
The two widest logs we milled into 10/4 slabs, the rest we milled closer to 5/4 planks. The 10/4 is ear-marked for a friend of mine who will use it to make electric guitar bodies. The rest? I’ll figure that out when it is dry and as the need arises.

I was at the shop this morning finishing up some alder columns that ship out to Ventura, Ca. on Monday and on a whim a project came to mind. I messed up one of the columns while I was making them (got the diameter to small). So I had to remake it since I needed four to go to California. December of 2006 brought, among other things like holiday cheer and a trip to the north east, a massive rain storm followed by record high winds to Seattle. The winds brought down many trees in the area, and our neighbors had 7 fall from the greenbelt in their back yard into their house and property. Our trees and yard survived without issue.

Yes it is finished and I have my shop back, but just for a short while. Monday my cabinet shop goes into full swing. I've held back while I built my house but the time has come to catch up with some bills. Knotty Alder with a natural finish.
