For a while I’ve been pondering upgrading my HVLP spray setup. After exploring the turbine vs. conversion gun issue I decided to go with a conversion gun setup. The next step was deciding on a compressor. Initially I was looking at 20 gallon sized portable compressors and trying to find one that would supply enough air to spray with any gun that I wanted to spray with. That was hard to find. I was stuck on portable because I really didn’t have room in my shop for a big stationary ...

I bought a compressor last week; a PC 3 nailer combo pack. With the limited space I have in the shop, portability is a necessity. Wood magazine had a plan for a compressor station in a back issue that I had so I decided to build their model. I spent a few hours last night cutting the parts and prepping the carcass.
This item is more carpentry than true woodworking. Joinery is simple butt joints but will hold up for what it is being used for. The base carcass will hold the compressor an...

I was able to work on this a little more today. Time was somewhat stretched but I was able to put the shelves on.
I still have to add a hose holder, handles, and the tires but its getting there. I am a horrible klutz at times and try to keep the floor as litter free as possible. The last thing I need is a tool that rests on the floor, complete with 50 feet of hose to trip over.
This gives me a place to store my nailers, nails, little compressor doo-dads, and a place to set tools, t...

Well, I have been slowly working on the this project over the last couple of weekends, but had to side track when my Air Compressor blew a gasket in the pump mechanism and I had to replace it (Turns out Good). With me having to work in the very hot loft to get this fixed I decided to go for broke and get all of my Compressor related sub projects taken care of. I had a slow leak on the unloader line, so I fixed that when I added the Automatic Drain Valve from Harbor Freight, thanks Patrick. I ...

...Because this can happen to yours too. Regulator didn’t shut off and it overfilled with me standing 10ft away. It flew 10ft through my shop (luckily in the opposite direction) and the blast wrecked everything within 15ft. Just wanted to say something so that it might not happen to someone else. I didn’t even register the fact that it had been running a while after I had stopped spraying paint.

Well day 4 was productive, just not on the deck.
About 1 week ago I was in the office in the shop and I heard a loud hissing. I went to find out what it was. The safety unload valve was dumping air from the air compressor tank. The compressor was running and it was not shutting off.
The safety valve was doing what it was suppose to do. Keep air compressor parts from flying all over the shop. Some how, some way the contacts welded shut on the shutoff switch. I moved the lever down to shu...

Kind of interesting how outside forces can affect your decisions on a more personal level. Obvious to everyone, we are in a bit of a tough economic time right now. I work in information technology and that is a field easily outsourced. Right now, I make ends meet and live a rather simple life. I work from home, make an ok wage, pay my child support, and make gradual improvements in the home. If something were to happen to my job, I have a few skills in other areas and could make ends meet, bu...

I’m so pleased. I’ve got two air compressors. One of them is one of those little ones with a small tank that is good for a nail gun but any air tool that runs continuously like a grinder or air sander it can’t handle.
I’ve had a used 5hp air compressor in the garage for a long time. I’ve never used it. It works great but was miserably out of adjustment so it wouldn’t turn off by itself. Pressure would build up and the bus fuses would blow in my shutoff b...
