Because time is flying, it’s already 3 months ago that a car ran into a telephone pole (and street light) outside my office building, knocking it (them) down.

The accident happened when I was nearly finished with a valance to hang over the patio doors and was drilling small holes through which I was threading gold cord. My old-age vision is rather poor so I had taken off my glasses and gotten my face really close to be able to see where I wanted to drill the hole. So I am building a box frame using box-joints.
I have my Incra 1000SE miter gauge setup with the stop block to cut the side pieces to length, and I’m all done with that.
Time to cut the box joints.
So I swap the blade on the table saw with my new (only used once before) Dado blade, I attach my homemade high fence for making box joints onto the Incra 1000 fence, and I’m ready to start cutting.

I was trimming some pieces of a “Spagnuolo” cutting board… well, its more like a trivet (8” square). I was using my father’s saw, he has nicer blade than me and I needed a glue line cut on these. I had just finished pushing the piece (8” long x 1”x 1”) through when BAM! I was hit hard, right between the eyes.

So I got my jointer blades back from the sharpener, Standard Saw Works, and they did a great job. It’s a cool store too and one of the storefront window displays is full of old wooden planes (I didn’t get a pic)
Once I got the blades back to the workshop I set about reinstalling them. My usual method is to use my dial indicator and twiddle with them for hours on end getting them just right but this time I tried a new approach which worked really well.

No matter how careful you think you are, when you feel the thunk of the blade as it catches on the bone means it’s too late. I reached to brush away a cutoff and got my thumb snagged in the blade. With my wife’s assistance I got it bandaged up, and then sat around all afternoon holding my hand up to relieve the pounding in my thumb. Three Ibuprofen and 30 minutes later I had relief.
Now all I feel is stupid.

Now for the interesting part of the story
I had to work through several problems, mostly caused by my inexperience, ignorance or optimism. The first was that I ordered the wrong size mirror. It looked fine in the drawings, but when I trimmed the arms to fit each other, I had to cut more off the mitred ends than planned for aesthetic reasons. I know you guys think I’ve vanished but to your dismay I am still here. It happens that a couple of french friends have come over to visit the country and they are staying over at our home for two weeks so I am quite busy showing them the area.

Well I had my first wood working accident yesterday. I was cutting a thin strip of wood on my tablesaw and it kicked back and pulled my fingers on my left hand into the blade. Thank god it only nicked the tips of two of my fingers. Well it just goes to show no matter how careful you are accidents still do happen.
