I’m new to hand planes so I wanted to start with fixer uppers because I feel like the end result is the effort you put into it. I picked up a Stanley Bailey #4 and Millers Falls #9? For $40/pair. This is just the start with the Bailey and all I have done so far is a bath in Evapo Rust. More pics and progress to come. Any pointers are welcome as this is new to me. After an Evapo Rust bath
I looked it up and 111 days ago I said that “in a few days I’ll be done with the Shelton” ... Not surprised that my few days turned into 111. Well it’s finally done with the exception of another coat or 2 of finish on the tote. This is the only plane I have of this style (other than my super smoother from Shampeon – but this one made of all metal and only has a chip breaker with and a cross pin rather than a lever cap), and so any tips / suggestions are appre...
I’ll preface this by stating that I’m no journalist, but I figure I might as well start a blog so I can ramble on a bit about what I’ve learned from the great community of people here on LJ’s. Ever since my Pops gave me this old tool box of his Dad’s and I posted a pic of these 2 planes (the Ohio 4-1/4 and the Shelton #4) a couple months ago I’ve been very intrigued by hand planes, after exchanging some messages with DonW and a couple others I’ve s...
A break from the normal murphy bed and switching gears to a twin four poster bed. I’m posting out of order, but here is the video of the post glue up. Video streaming by UstreamThe post will be 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” with a small chamfer on the edges to make an octagon look. I’m going to stop the chamfer on the inside where the post attach. This will allow my bracket room to mount. For more building pictures see my Current Projects link at wwbeds.com o...
I mean literally – I got the shaper to work :). I guess that would constitute as a tool gloat, although I’m not much of a gloater, I just like getting things done. I got this shaper off of CL a couple of weeks ago just because it was too good of a deal to pass up. I contacted the seller, and told them my budget which was lower than their posted price, and they agreed to my offer – I was psyched! I’ll probably set it up with some 3/4 bore cutters for cope-stile at some ...
Had some good progress on the garage reorganization, Although it may not look like it. To start, I wanted to tackle all the medium sized lumber that was now roaming around, scattered on the floor in various locations as it no longer had a dedicated place. I had 4 kitchen cabinets that I got off of craigslist a couple of years ago hoping it’ll help me get organized, but in the end, it just took wall space, and didn’t prove to be very useful, as it was just left as is, and ended ...
Hello, my name is TD and I’m a planeaholic. There I said it, they say that admitting you have a problem is the biggest step. Whew! Now I can get to the good stuff. Lets take a look at where it all began I was walking through a local junk store just minding my own business when my eyes were drawn to a collection of rusty metal items assembled in what looked to be the shape of a plane (I had seen planes before here on Lumberjocks but had never encountered one in the wild). I had ...
So there I was last night. Down in the shop putting the finishing touches on a piece of cherry that would become a part of the desk I’ve been making for my daughter Madison. The pieces are all cut and dimensioned so now I’m just using my smoothing planes to put that sheen on the face that only a sharp blade can achieve. I have nothing against sanding, but I promised myself a long time ago to keep on practicing when and where I can with the hand planes. I’ve come a long w...
