Starting them Young

791 days ago by MsDebbieP | 9 comments »

I was walking through Canadian Tire today, walking quickly past the tool section with eyes diverted from the possibilities, when I overheard the following conversation between a father and a 5 year old little girl.Dad: checking out some curtain rods or something… Little Girl: you can never have enough poles, right Daddy? ... I’m sure he has taught her this so when he’s looking at clamps or tools in general he’ll get the same response: you can never have enough, r...

"Slabbin' at Wood" #5: "Homelite 26 LCS" --by RusticWoodArt

791 days ago by frank | 5 comments »

Homelite 26 LCS I thought I would post an-other one of my collected chainsaws here from the bygone days of ‘golden oldies’.... ....and when one really gets to studying these ‘beasts’, one can also much more appreciate where we are today, with chainsaws in terms of safety, (don’t you just love the safety word) weight, horsepower and ease of the cut in the wood…. ....the Homelite 26 LCS was introduced in 1951 and discontinued in 1953…. ...

Virtual Dining Table Challenge - Hundertwasser Table

792 days ago by daltxguy | 12 comments »

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) was an Austrian Painter and sculptor. Born in Austria he lived and worked primarily in Vienna but eventually made New Zealand his permanent home. He was one of Austria’s best known contemporary artists though he remains controversial. I first got to know Hundertwasser from my own time spent living in Vienna and like Hundertwasser I too now make my home in New Zealand, so it seemed appropriate to use his work as my inspiration. The common themes in hi...

What a three months it has been since I stumbled onto an online community called LumberJocks. I leafed through the project pages amazed at the craftsmanship of this group. I began to question whether or not I was worthy to join this group. Did I have any knowledge, ability or skill to share? Like Sparta, facing the hords, I was afraid that like so many forums you find disagreement met with hostility and unsupported bias. Projects lacking for whatever reason not met with constructive c...

Bookmatch Mesquite

792 days ago by BlueStingrayBoots | 21 comments »

Hello freinds. I started a new project, that makes 3 I’m working on. I had some 1” slabs in the shed and everytime I look at them the same idea popped into my head, bookmatch opposites. I cut away the unusable wood, basicly just a wavy consistant pencil line that would trace clearly on the other piece. So I used a jig saw and put the two pieces together. At first the fit wasnt too good so I trimmed with jig saw til they fit together. I then added bar-clamps to tighten fit, there w...

New hardwood flooring...

792 days ago by woodgizmo | 7 comments »

My wife and I decided that since we were going to be empty nesters this fall, we would take the opportunity to redo the flooring in the main level of the home. We started the project in the latter part of February finally finishing it up in the late part of May. My wife is a nurse and ended up being called to another facility for several weeks which slowed up our progress considerably. Originally the living room and dining room were covered in a Berber carpet and the kitchen and foyer ...

They called him Skip #1: A reminescence in one part, about my first woodworking influence. (With addendum)

At the LA Coliseum grounds, circa 1942, prior to mustering out for North Africa with the 35th Infantry Division. Blame it on Ken Burns. I just have caught snippets of “The War” being shown on PBS. The poignant glimpses into the individual lives of men and women caught up in WWII has sparked memories of my personal war hero and my first wood-working mentor, my Father, Clark Edmond Victor Bordner. Although we buried my Dad 23 years ago this coming October 3rd (in blue jeans a...

Learning from Mistakes - Advice from a 9 year old.

I’ve been fiddling in the shop lately. Mostly with multimedia. I’ll be blogging my setup for my shop cam and computer work station, but last night I decided to make a small box. I’ve been amazed at the work that our resident small box experts make. Of course, Don, but including (but not limited to) Terdy , Andy , BigMP , YorkshireStewart , Paul , TonyWard , Dorje and everyone else who has tagged their projects with Box . I’ve been wanting to do some concealed w...

Building an assembly bench #1: Setting up the basic unit...

793 days ago by woodgizmo | 1 comment »

I’ve been wanting to build a new assembly bench for awhile now. I’ve seen dozens of unique ideas on the internet, but finally settled on a bench that resembles a utility cart. The entire base of the unit and the first 3 layers of the top were built from plywood salvaged from shipping crates that I obtained at work. I intend to wrap the top in hardwood and place a final layer of hardboard on top. The hardboard will be replaceable. I glued the top layers together and threw every clam...
