I recieved the second Plough plane from the UK in the mail today. This one is the little sister of the Record 044 I showed in my last blog entry. This one is a small plough plane made by record and imitated by a couple of other manufactures including Marples. This plane is useful for quickly making groves in boards for drawers and similar applications.
Let me introduce the Record 043 to you. I’m show it next to my Lie-Nielson low angle block plane to give you a sense of scale. I...

This project is a great example of the following old adage: “No good deed goes unpunished.”
A while back I was at church on Sunday morning. During coffee hour my wife was saying things like “You remember John, don’t you?” while I was talking with a few people. A rather subtle approach, I admit, but it got me thinking. Maybe I’d better do something to offset the somewhat irregular nature of my attendance. I noticed that a small side table in the paris...

In some of the other posts in this series, Bob Babcock and I were bouncing around ideas about making this bench portable. I toyed with this and after coming up with some relatively complex ways to make the top removable, the obvious (or so I think) approach dawned on me.
The simple solution is to widen the crosspiece at the top of the leg assembly by 2 inches. Widening the bottom two supports that are part of the bench top assembly is also required. This allows for 4 to 6 bolts to be used ...

My wife brought to my attention a poster project to promote Pandora radio’s affiliation with Global Giving, a project which targets children to provide music education. I entered this poster, as a homage to the music venue posters of the 60’s. I’d appreciate your vote, if you’re so inclined.
The winner gets the exposure and $500 in money to spend at an indie music store. Woo Hoo! You can vote daily until the contest closes on August 24th, so as they used to say in C...

Words of Heart
—-today i stopped along my way to breathe, as it had been some time since i had passed here before, much was the clutter of ancient baggage i had so accumulated, till from the many aspirations of all that surrounded me;
....i grew, a heavy heart….
—-good natured and kindly objects of activity, were these favorites who came to play their wares, what did they know that i wanted none of their things, and so i closed the door for what seemed an eternity ...

Workshop Principles
….taking time out, as i waundered home after the days work, is an intoxicating drink of heady ale, where those who stop and drink can soon get lost in an-other time and era….And it is in these places where I oft do stop, to taste my dreams and set them free….so I invite you to come along and lets cover some ground in these forest of trees where ones, such as I can still dwell.
These were taken around 7:00 pm the other night as I was coming in from a...

I wanted to talk to everyone about teaching, as a profession. I am sure that with the talent that I have seen already up to this point that surly there must be a few teachers in the Lj. I recently have become a teacher in high school, teaching my profession, basically Emergency Medicine.
I have been an EMT for way to long (15 years) but found that working in the field for 5 years or more I am able to teach what I do through the ROP (regional occupational program). I guess there are two ...

I thought it would make sense to share how I have Sketchup setup for woodworking. The basic settings make a difference in how Sketchup works for different purposes.
One caveat…I use Sketchup Pro…the free version may not have all these settings. I think it does but I’m not positive. I’ll be installing the free version on my other computer shortly so I can check these things.
There are two areas where you will likely want to make changes. The Preferences window and...

From Marine Surveying to inventing a woodworking tool: why of course, what else would one do?
This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jim Lindsay, President of OMS Tool Company and inventor of the DowelMax.
The HistoryI asked Jim how the transition to inventing took place and he shared a bit of history with me. In 1995, he was ten years away from retirement and not really looking forward to it. Then, one day as he was working in his shop, he had the idea for the soon-to-be “Do...
