I just talked with Mark DeCou

03-08-2007 04:06 AM by Karson | 15 comments »

I just spent the last hour talking with Mark. He has a little (OK maybe more) pain. The surgery was just below the rib cage so any coughing or heavy breathing brings on pain. He said that he is trying to use many short breaths to ease the suffering. No driving for a week and no workshop for 10 days to 2 weeks. No lifting anything over 10 lbs. We spent a lot of time discussing LumberJocks and the changes we see and possible some changes we’d like to see. (Like with all of the ne...

Wish I had a Saw Stop

03-08-2007 03:29 AM by SteveV | 38 comments »

I just discovered this great Web site the other day through the Wood Whisperer’s site which is another great site!! When creating my profile or was it when I responded to a couple of blog entries I must have mention my table saw meets thumb story. In the last 24 hrs I have gotten 2 requests to explain the incident in hopes it will prevent others from doing the same. First, let me say, it was a “cheap” lesson seeing that I only lost the tip or 1/2 inch but just enough to...

Trying to Play Catch-up

03-08-2007 02:33 AM by Don | 16 comments »

In my previous blog, I wrote about some of the things that have distracted me from blogging on LumberJocks. Well, the distraction continues. For the past two days, I’ve been removing wallpaper and painting. I also did a major shop clean-up. But the biggest distraction was my computer system. I had to send my computer back into the hospital to have a Vista-ectomy. A warning to those thinking of installing Microsoft’s new operating system, Vista; if you purchase an upgrade ...

Learning Curve #6: Frustration

03-07-2007 11:51 PM by MsDebbieP | 7 comments »

...and so with excitement and anticipation I began my second purse. Step 1: the designAgain, adapting a design seen online I created a pattern for the purse handle, thinking everything through as much as I coud, given the amount of experience I had with making wooden purse handles (ah, that would be 1 prior handle) Step 2: Cutting the handlesI chose to use a 1/4” thick piece of hmm… was it oak that we had picked up? A hardwood, anyway, and I placed the pattern on the wood an...

'This Old Crack House' #14: He called me a cripple

03-07-2007 06:30 PM by Dusty | 7 comments »

A friend who I met on my bus route, a master plumber and electrician, was, according to him, recently “sentenced” to a supervisory role, due a small series of strokes. He was no longer able to work directly in the field practicing his trades. Although grateful to at least still be able to go to work, it was evident he was struggling with not being able to do what he loved and had done for the past 30 years. He knew I was doing some remodeling on my house and had a few other projects in...

Okay, so I am somewhat new to the hobby, though not really a newbie. I have built a china cabinet for my ex, done plenty of trim work, and had plenty of little projects, none of which were finished (as in painted or stained). I did a custom cabinet door for the stairway storage area which I will try to post some pics of. My main focus right now is getting a planer and a jointer. I have the money for a JET 6” longbed jointer with the quick set blades. There is a big sale at Ideal Sa...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #2: My report on yesterdays excursion to my shop.

Once I got out there, I shook off the shakes immediately. I commenced to install my new Triton router into my router table. I had to cut a new opening in my table for a larger router plate. It took me awhile, because I had lay the new plate into position, & scribe a line with a sharp knife. Then clamp down some guide boards in order to rout out the new opening. I ended up with a perfect fit. After fastening the router to the new plate, I dropped it into the table. Then I ran a test wi...

OUCH!!

It was another sunny day, temps in the 70’s and I was in the workshop. I decided to spend my time converting some rived white oak into some usable lumber. The pieces I was working on were rougher than those I’ve been working with. These had a lot of splintering left from the riving process, so I decided to use my drawknife to clean them up before moving on to my hand plane and/or jointer. As I began, the thought passed through my mind of how I had almost forgotten how well my ...
