What I learned today (or more accurately, what I observed today – only time will tell if I’ve actually learned anything)
1. As they say in financial circles – “past performance is no guarantee of future performance”. In my case this translates into “where the garage roof leaked yesterday is no indication of where it will leak today”. Some of my wood got wet – not serious, but annoying – I was looking forward to a happy day of sanding (yeah, right), but the rain put ...

As it seems with every project, there are always set-backs. I was nearly finished except for the bottom doors when I ran out of stain. The paint store that custom-mixed the stain is 35 miles away so I decided to experiment with dye.
Well, not on the bookcase, but on my hair. Do you like the results? When I finally got the stain and finished the doors, I had only three hinges for the bottom doors. The top doors were made with an additional ¼” added to make the doors 1” thick wh...

Well, the request has been made by the “Big Boss”... She wants a lap desk for her chair. She has asked for it to be made of zebrawood or a spalted maple. I think she was joking. I am going to work on it next week. We are going out of town this weekend and I am going to try and get some photos of some of the projects at my Dads. Well getting late and I need to get up early in the a.m. Will write more later.

First, I would like to thank all the LJ’s that have welcomed me to the website. I look forward to learning new things and sharing anything I may know that will help other LJ’s. By trade, I am a Manufacturing Project Engineer for a golf car manufacturer. As a hobby, I have been woodworking for 20+ years. I just recently completed by dream shop. I still need to build all the cabinets, etc. Before starting on the cabinets, my wife has told me that I have to finish a pantry I have pro...

Some of the more popular wood working podcasters have agreed that this week would be safety week. They are all dedicating at least one show to the topic of safety this week. Unfortunately I have not yet heard anyone mention the excellent safety series that is currently being run in popular woodworking magazine. Marc Adams is methodically going through one tool an issue and teaching you how to safely use this tool. These articles aren’t about jigs or clean cuts because those topics ...

I recently had a very large 50 year old pine in my yard and had it chopped up into 3 foot sections for handling. I would like to season the wood properly and am not exactly sure how to get started other than coating the ends with an oil based poly urethane or other sealer.
I was able to seal the pieces which range from 4 inches across to nearly 3 feet across using said polyurethane w/in 36 hours. I do have some minor checking at one end of some of the sections
I was wondering should c...

Okay I had the lamp almost completely sanded before I was able to get the holes drilled. I myself have only drilled a few lamps so my husband helps out with this. It is not as easy as it seems, you have to make sure that you are aiming just right so you come out in the right spot so you end up through the bottom of the lamp.
This first shot is of course the first hole that is being drilled, in the second shot you can see where the drill bit is coming out.
Now starting at the exit hole w...

Kokedera Temples in the Woods
And so while on my way to work yesterday morning, I decided to do a drop off from the mainframe of time and go for a short walkabout. Haha,....I really have to laugh at myself now in what I just said, since who ever heard of a ‘short’ walkabout? I sometimes read the stories of Aborigines and how the young men start this feat while yet young ….and will often go for months at a time.
Anyways getting back to my story and trying to not be dist...
