I got to spend a little time in the shop last night. I fooled around with the old plane of my grandfathers. My WW buddy “sarge” showed me yesterday how to adjust the blade. I discovered last night as i “played” with it,practicing on a piece of scrap wood, why so many woodworkers avoid such tools. ”It ain’t easy”I’m not discouraged (yet anyway)..I will keep reading, practicing and maybe someday I will become skilled enough to at least use it on a ...

Sorry for not posting more. I have several projects stacked up in my shop and I have much of what I haven’t shown (little used favorites) stored out of the way in corners and back spaces. I would have to intentionally move projects out into the drive and dig into the deeper recesses of “my space,” take pics and move it all back. I tend to bang and scratch things when I move them too much, so it will be a while yet. I love viewing Wayne’s finds and would still love ...

It just struck me that I would like to make some kind of till for my Japanese saws (that I primarily use for carpentry). I’m always nervous about bending the blades or chipping the teeth when throwing them (always set them on top of everything in my tool bag) in the bag with clamps, hammers, drill motors and the like. They’re protected by the cardboard sleeves they came in, but the idea of a long, narrow till, seems right to me.
I’m thinking it would be nice to make it ...

Ok, Here’s the deal. Its 12:35pm. My daughter has a doctors appt at 3:45. I have procrastinated my challenge project to the point that I had to abandon my idealistic goal of glueless wedge tenons. I do reserve the right to rechallenge myself at a later date on that joint. I will get it done! The legs are clamped up and nearly dry
Here's the top. Pocket holes have replaced wedge tenons...Yes, I'm in a hurry.
The sides are small, but mighty!

Now that I am a lumberjock I guess I need to do what all lumberjocks do …. spend a lot of time on the computer. Ok, well, maybe not. It is a good start anyway.
No, seriously, one of the reasons that I joined up here was so that I could share my experiences in the shop as well as hopefully get advice from other members on what to do when I hit the wall trying to come up with ideas.
I have never blogged before, but I think I can probably handle this. I like to show off what is go...

I’ve been hammered at work this week and have had little time to do any woodwork. I was able to get out into the shop tonight and put together a simple coping sled for my router table. It felt good to get something put together.
I had picked up a new flush trim bit a couple of weekend ago and made a handle from a template. A few pieces of MDF and a couple of clamps and I am off and running. All and all a good way to release some stress.
I’m trying to decide what to work on...

When I awoke yesterday morning, I thought I was dreaming. It sounded like rain drops on our roof. Sure enough, it was raining like crazy. That was at 6 AM. About 2 hours later it started snowing, & we ended up with a little over 4”.
This morning our back yard looked like a fairyland. Here is one of the images.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE !!!

Controversy and Knots
....i love the controversy that comes from working the wood, i love the controversy of knotted knotty knots, picking up pen and paper i stir some words that cut like wood, soon i realize that words and wood and knots are all what it’s about….
....controversy ‘just is’ the sweet smelling aroma that describes my knots, and so i throw out some descriptive words by telling tales of knots, ...

From my blog:
Christopher Schwarz made a terrific presentation at the Berea Hand Tool Conference in November: Forgotten Workbenches and Workholding.
During his presentation Chris covered workholding (it will appear in the videos for Parts 2 and 3 on this blog). As a result of this presentation, I started doing some serious thinking about my European style workbench, and how I could improve clamping of work pieces when hand cutting dovetails, clamping jigs in place, etc.
The existing ...

While on my weekly trash run to the transfer station I came across a perfectly good pair of work bench legs and an old solid core door. With these and a couple of 2×4s and a few bolts I now have a sturdy bench to hold all my material and get it off the floor.
