Atlanta Pen Show

275 days ago by itsme_timd | 1 comment »

This isn’t exactly a woodworking thing but thought some others might be interested in it. Over breakfast yesterday I noticed someone reading the paper and a picture of 4 pens with some catchy title next to the pic – I got nosy and found out The Atlanta Pen Show was this weekend. I like to turn pens and I collect as well so I decided to head over this afternoon. Nice place for some browsing and checking out styles, etc. There were (of course) many of the big name companies ...

Tablesaw Tuning #2: Day 2

350 days ago by John | 4 comments »

Spent most of yesterday trying to get it sorted out. It’s closer than it was but not quite right. Here’s what your contractor saw looks like on the inside. Underside of a contractor saw. Cast iron top propped up between my router table and the contractor saw stand. View from the front. Just to the lower left of the bolt hole is the area I had to grind to get enough side to side adjustment from the trunnion. This is the blade tilt adjustment shaft. This is the front ...

First Dovetail, First Jig

352 days ago by Eric | 4 comments »

I was considering using dowels to help hold my boards together for my benchtop; specifically, those boards that are a little extra bowed. However, Matt of Matt's Basement Workshop has informed me that due to the considerable strength of face-to-face gluing, that dowels might not be necessary – even for bowed boards. However, just in case, I decided to make a simple jig following Matt’s suggestion, which was:Two pieces of wood, one attached to the top of the other to act as a...

Spitting the Dummy!

550 days ago by Don | 9 comments »

I had run out of 16mm (5/8”) glass tubes for my turned Rose Bud Vases. So I phoned my supplier who is only open every second Saturday of the month for walk-in business to ask him if he had any in stock. (He’s primarily in the mail-order business.) “Yep – we have ‘em”, was his reply. So I decided to drive the 60 mile round trip to his place of business and pick them up. I reasoned that this would work better than risking damage to the delicate tubes...

Yelling Fire In A Crowded Woodshop

700 days ago by dennis mitchell | 7 comments »

I’d just gotten married. Just gotten out of school. We were struggled a bit financially. I was hired on at a local woodshop. They had about 4 to 5 of us working there and I was the only smoker. I have managed to quit this horribly addictive habit THANK GOD. Any way one day after chain smoking two cigarettes on break I get back to work. Pretty soon I start smelling a fire. I go tell the boss and we start hunting for it. Well first we smell it in one area then one guy smells it over here....

Recovery projects #6: Getting the tools ready again

94 days ago by Betsy | 6 comments »

OK so now I know I’m really on the mend. I’m planning, planning and planning some more! First thing I know I need to do since most of any major projects for a while will be hand tool stuff (with the exceptions of those trivets I want to try on the router table), I decided that I need to make sure my tools are sharp, clean and ready to work. With all that in mind – I’ve collected my sharpening things, my chisels and educational materials to prep myself to actually...

Fairy Doors #1: #9 in Progress

141 days ago by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

Aug 19, 2008 Warning: NO PICTURES attached. (So if you “NEED” pictures you will just have to wait until I’m finished the project!) Fairy Door #9 is for my #1 grand-daughter who will be turning 6 next month! This door, of course will have to be special and that means that it will be more than just a door. Yes, the door is going to open. Well, that’s the plan anyway. I had a heck of a time trying to figure out the hinges with the door only being 1/4” thick...

My woodworing ideas and tips #9: My mind set and woodworking

177 days ago by Betsy | 7 comments »

Some say my mind is set—- in other words – I’m stubborn. So say they. I prefer to think I have a mind set. In other words – I think a certain way about certain things. Safety is one of those things that I have a mind set about and my mind is set on. I’ve been thinking about this today as I sit here, yet another day on the couch, unable to go to the shop and do what I would prefer to do. I’ve been thinking that maybe if I just do this little something ...

Woodworking vacation #10: Final day - second entry

228 days ago by Betsy | 0 comments »

Sorry for the interruption – I’m on a timed system at the hotel. Back to the spring joint. The spring joint makes for an almost invisible glue joint. I’m sure someone else can explain why this joint works so well, but I can tell you it works. I’ve made plenty of panels without spring joints and I have spent countless hours trying to clean them up. I’ve got an invisible joint on this board and spent about five minutes cleaning up the board as a whole. After ...
