first strake in a strip kayak

133 days ago by psolver1 | 2 comments »

wow! 1:30 am i knew “i’m not going to bed until i get at least one plank on” was not a healthy statement. that comes from lots of experience. however, i just glued the first plank in place. with 16 station molds and two stem molds my imagination was stretched to come up with roughly 40 clamping positions. a combination of lead drafting ducks, bungee chords, c clamps, and spring clamps are holding the first strake in place. now the worst part about working late. going ba...

coming from the outside gate...and she's off! #1: Thanks for the warm welcome, here's a bit about me...

Thanks for the Welcome gentleman! I’m fairly new to the home woodworking experience. In my younger days, I worked in a moulding dept in California. It’s where safety first was driven home. I did learn that whole milk will save a finger. Learned that kick back can be deadly, moulding blades spin faster than the eye can see when they leave the machine, forklifts don’t necessarily rip limbs off but can put a bone at such an angle that Picasso would be proud, and fires in the hopper are not fun w...

But now I want to hear from you lumberjocks what record album cover do you want me to woodburn. If you have an idea of your own you can certainly comment it or you could choose some I listed. 1. my intro to wood working #3: old too soon, smart too late

263 days ago by romansfivefive | 6 comments »

The other day I spent hours doing 5 minutes of work. I had decided that the firetruck I am working on, should have telescopic outirggers to help it balance when the ladders are fully extended. Of course I am too cheap to buy a pattern so I found some blue prints online (www.seagrave.com) and I have been working from those to try to make this work. I spent hours measuring and drawing and cutting, then recutting, then realizing I cut it too short, then starting over again, then cutting, then cu...

Future location of Spinters #1: Part 2...

The number of steps involved in taking on a project like this are many I know and I am trying to take one step at a time and not get to carried away….. I know it will be a fun, exciting process and intend to enjoy each and ever step along the way….... It was suggested by a friend as a way to save money and time was to get the foundation in and ready to go…. then have an ole fashioned barn raising. Whereas gathering together family and friends we could have the structure ...

Tattoo Table #1: Just getting started

283 days ago by Boon | 4 comments »

So i was recently given a chance to make a coffee table for my local tattoo shop, and while they aren’t picky, i do have about a $300 limit, maybe more if I really impress. Today i started drawing up plans and looking up stuff online. so far the table top will be 62×34 inches with runners, stretchers and prefab legs. which brings me to my next question, where is the best place to look that has the biggest assortment of 12 to 16 inch turned/tapered legs? i did a google search but wa...

Woodturning #3: Green Wood & New Toys

284 days ago by PhilipR | 5 comments »

For the past couple months I’ve been trying to get my hands on some green wood to practice with. Aside from being cheaper it’s so much nicer to turn and there’s very little dust involved. I called several tree services around town and finally found someone who was willing to let me come by and go through his wood pile. Unfortunately, work got in my way three weeks ago, and the flu got in his way the week after that. Work was hectic again this week so I was expecting to go another seven da...
