I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’d be interested in hearing the perspectives on this subject from all of you LumberJocks out there. Thanks for reading!

Jute webbing is criss-crossed over the bottom of the frame and tacked in place. Springs are attached (tied) to the webbing. I saved the jute webbing with springs intact and just replaced them in the new frame. I did pull the jute tighter than it was when it was removed. Use had stretched it a bit.
The springs are tied together and to the frame to “fix” each spring to a spot and to give the seat it’s general shape. I did remove the original ties because I had ...

Ok, that’s WAY too long for someone like me to go without writing…
Part of me feels like I shouldn’t blog about woodworking when I haven’t done any in three months. Part of me says I need the release of writing and that maybe I can write about woodworking until things settle down enough to where I can actually DO some woodworking… Let’s go with Part 2.
The wife and I are starting to feel settled in the new house. A lot of the major projects are pre...

One More Night-
OK I had to stay up one more night and do some final polishing on the site. There are still a couple of things I need to take care of but they can wait. I am very comfortable that the site is ready for public consumption.
There is supposed to be a press release and I had to get this done. Friday the paper here in my Ohio hometown is doing an article, I am still quite attached to my roots here. Besides the press release, I am trying to get an article in the Billings, ...

So, now I have posted most of the things that I have built, and will start blogging about projects and that kind of thing. Currently I am finishing up the school year at the High School that I teach at in Santa Rosa CA. This is my first year as a Student Government teacher and I am just now realizing that the end of the school year is the busiest part of the year for that position with all sorts of things going on, mainly a trip to Disneyland for 255 of the graduating seniors in two weeks, ...

”Art-Full Imagination”
....and so just as my hands where finding a place of rest, from the duties of my gouging tool, my mind opened up and swallowed a look of forlorn desire, as my eyes laid hold upon this thing i had hoped to call art….
—-and what is art unless one has sat in the dung heap of job, where with saintly satisfaction gone the way of passing nodes of ashes gone knotty grey, i have once again become the sounding gong of wood songs greatest orchestral ...

I’ve been reading “The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking” By James Krenov. The first portion of the book is a essay on wood. It is about an attitude we have toward wood. The care we take obtaining curing and milling lumber. I’m relating to his collecting Cocobolo, Indian Laurel, flitch-cut Pearwood and something called Incensio. The special care he takes drying and storing his wood. The art of resawing logs. The spirit of being a true craftsman.I’m reflecting on this as...

After my clients chose a clear natural finish for the table, I used a natural-colored grain filler and 5 coats of satin Minwax Wipe On Poly to complete the tables.
It took about 10 men to lift and move it to my 12 foot trailer to move it to the church. The legs and stretchers were assembled using oak pins using the draw bore pin method. The table top dropped into position nicely and with a few screws to keep it from “floating off”. :-) You can never trust gravity, you know.
