The "Wounded Earth" box...

329 days ago by Vjer | 2 comments »

The inspiration for the box came from the two wood species used in the project. The wife and I were at a hardwood store in Houston because I wanted some birdseye maple for another project. While I was selecting what I wanted, the wife brought out this piece of beautiful piece of cocobolo and added it to what we had. The cocobolo looked like it was on fire. It sat in my shop for several months because my work has me out of state for weeks at a time. Whenever I came home, I would go look at tha...

Wood Scrap Box #3: One more slight adjustment

345 days ago by CutNRun | 7 comments »

Well, the jewelry box is assembled and now complete. I assembled everything and did one final trial assembly, including mounting the doors. The hinges were neatly mortised and the doors were perfectly aligned – 1/16” space on all sides. I opened the doors and discovered the drawings behind the doors lacked a shy 1/16” of clearing the hinges. Rats. So… I filled the mortises on the back of the doors and doubled the depth of the mortises in the casing. The doors are...

this artisan house #4: a triptych of balloons

348 days ago by scottb | 9 comments »

Continuing the theme of filling my house (and those of my loved ones) with art and pieces of functional beauty…. January has us thinking about resolutions, promises and time gone by… (which is another blog theme in itself) I painted these for my mom (who loves balloons) back in the summer of 1997, and I gave them to her for Christmas that year. The landscape is a hay field in upstate Vermont (south of Burlington) the three images represent day, evening and night in the style...

My "Starter Set"

355 days ago by Eric | 8 comments »

[Taken from my Adventures in Woodworking blog, August 2007] Before heading back to SE Asia, I needed to accumulate the bare minimum tools needed for woodworking by hand. The class I attended at Homestead Heritage recommends 10 tools in particular, and this is where I started: combination square set of chisels strong layout knife combination marking/mortise gauge small dovetail or gent’s saw tenon saw small hammer for joint assembly solid joiner’s mallet smoothing plane...

A Special Visitor

420 days ago by Phil Brown | 2 comments »

I was delighted to have a special visitor this afternoon just before I left on my trucking run. Having just completed Jim’s casket, http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3333, my wife called his wife Carol to make arrangements for delivery, and was very surprised to hear Jim’s voice at the other end of the line. He was home from the hospital and sounded chipper. After subsequent phonecalls and a visit to their home, my wife informed me that Carol would be coming over to view the cas...

Contractor Saw Refurbishing #4: At the top of the homestretch....

427 days ago by slaphitter | 1 comment »

The project has been delayed for almost a month as a few critical parts were special ordered. Largely due to my failure to positively identify the model of the saw, I was not able to find OEM handwheels. So I went ahead and ordered solid cast aluminum handwheels, with revolving handles, in the proper dimensions. I also had to order lockknobs for the handwheels. These are not SAE dimensions, they are metric. Impossible to find anyone with lockknobs with an 8mm steel threaded insert ...

Incra template keeper

435 days ago by Blake | 4 comments »

Just a quick tip… The templates for my Incra positioner kept bugging me because I had no good place to put them. They kept falling out of the taped-shut plastic envelope. So I got the idea to use the plastic tube that the Incra miter slot came in. All I did was cut it shorter to fit the templates. Now they are much easier to store, find, and search through.

Sherwood Forest #2: Wherein Pappy Meets the Sherriff of Nottingham

449 days ago by A.W. "Pappy" Ford | 9 comments »

Readers of my previous post in this series will remember that ol’ Pappy has undergone a transformation of late: my newfound obsession with woodworking has come with unexpected side effects, namely the urge to recover every ounce of usable wood from a premature end. It’s taken over a goodly share of me mental facilities (which didn’t necessarily have a lot of room to spare to start with.) Marching under this new banner of Responsible Resource Use I arrived at work the oth...

The Craftsman's Path #11: Sam Maloof on design

452 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 0 comments »

I’ve recently been doing some reading on various designers in search of guidance and inspiration. Sam Maloof has always been one of my favorites. In doing so, I came across some quotes from Maloof that express some of his philosophies on woodworking and design. In this post on my blog I explore these and share some of my thoughts on them. I’d be interested in hearing the perspectives on this subject from all of you LumberJocks out there. Thanks for reading!

Furniture Restoration #11: Reconstructing Inner Spring Seat

474 days ago by Paul | 5 comments »

Jute webbing is criss-crossed over the bottom of the frame and tacked in place. Springs are attached (tied) to the webbing. I saved the jute webbing with springs intact and just replaced them in the new frame. I did pull the jute tighter than it was when it was removed. Use had stretched it a bit. The springs are tied together and to the frame to “fix” each spring to a spot and to give the seat it’s general shape. I did remove the original ties because I had ...
