Okay, so I am somewhat new to the hobby, though not really a newbie. I have built a china cabinet for my ex, done plenty of trim work, and had plenty of little projects, none of which were finished (as in painted or stained). I did a custom cabinet door for the stairway storage area which I will try to post some pics of. My main focus right now is getting a planer and a jointer. I have the money for a JET 6” longbed jointer with the quick set blades. There is a big sale at Ideal Sa...

Pen Turners' Swap - Round 3 #9: How much wood would a CanadianWoodChuck chuck???

17 days ago by itsme_timd | 10 comments »

We’re about to find out! Man, I really got discombobulated on this last trip, The box made it from Scott to Ned without me updating the blog and then I forgot to tag the last entry as part of the series so you can see Ned’s update here. Now, the box should be on it’s way to CanadianWoodChuck, in Canada, of course! I think the timing on this couldn’t have been better as I know we’ll all be busy around Christmas and the New Year so it’s a great time t...

More excuses for not woodworking

139 days ago by Dan Lyke | 4 comments »

Shortly after that last entry with the second prototype cabinet door, I was pulling 180°s off the lip of the bowl at the skate park (inline skates), and went down hard. Hard enough to hit my helmet. I breathed through it a bit, went and sat at the side, and then decided I shouldn’t be skating anyway if I was falling like that. So I went home, and the next day my shoulder still hurt, so after work I went to the emergency room and was told I had an ACJ separation, which is where th...

Rustic Reasons #1: The Beginning

154 days ago by drgoodwood | 2 comments »

I love woodworking and I love Nature. Therefore, I have dedicated myself to making rustic furniture and twig crafts. Besides, it’s a tradition in my family; even though I didn’t formally recognize it for my first fifty years.I grew up around rustic furniture but I didn’t really see it in my youth. My Grandfather, Great Uncles, and their friends made it and used it, neither because they had to nor because they wanted to, but because it was a thrifty and natural thing to do. Need a simple t...

Serving Tray Challenge #1: Project Interruptus

163 days ago by SPalm | 10 comments »

I wanted to enter a serving tray into the 2008 summer contest. I had always wanted to try a ‘stained glass with wood’ kind of technique and thought this would be a good place to try it. Being a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, I thought I would try a take off on one of his windows. But as luck would have it, the motor in my table saw decided to commit suicide. I spent hours taking the motor apart, cleaned the bearings and centrifugal starting switch, but it seems to keep frying starting capacitors...

One Man's Junk - Chair #7: Lean on me

177 days ago by Zuki | 7 comments »

Not much happened in the shop this evening. I decided to attach the Back Stretchers. Firstly I had to do some marking on the inside of the Back Posts so I would get a good idea on where to drill the recessed holes for the screws. I drilled pilot holes from the inside out and used those holes to guide the bit for the recessed screws. Here I am at the DP. I actually managed to take this picture myself using the timer function. Yea . . . I know . . . all cameras have timers, however ...

Shop evolution #5: Router Table #4: The Final Chapter...

178 days ago by ShannonRogers | 2 comments »

This is excerpted from my blog: The Renaissance Woodworker. So after getting the table top installed and making some cuts I was overjoyed with how it was working and the complete lack of setup needed to get cutting. The router lift makes my life so much easier. I used this table for my recent flurry of Adirondack furniture builds (10 chairs, 6 footstools, whew!) to round off all the edges on the slats. You can only imagine the pile of sawdust on my floor by the end of that session. I a...

Bandsaw Adventure #5: Set-up

195 days ago by Hrolfr | 9 comments »

I unboxed the saw an with help from my father on Sunday got the saw body attached and the riser block installed. My wife’s birthday was Tuesday, so my family took us out to dinner then did the cake and presents thing at my Wife and my house. (hence how I got my father to come help me). The saw sat mostly together on Monday night as friends of our recently became parents and they wanted a night out with the baby “McLovin” ( I love my friends) and we are the most laid bac...

Prototypes #2: Building Prototypes - Group 1

196 days ago by darryl | 2 comments »

Prior to finishing my latest segmented pen, I cut several hundred segments with 22.5 degree angles to create a few more pens with eight segment layers. Having these pieces of Maple, Walnut and Jatoba, I thought it would be a nice way to get a good visual of what some different designs could be. Kind of like a rough sketch in 3-D. I didn’t want to get into gluing anything and commit myself to a design I didn’t fully like, so I carefully stacked my segments and let gravity hold everything to...
