another mans trash contest... #1: fixin to get ready

122 days ago by scottb | 2 comments »

I’ve been very excited about this particular contest. Making things out of other things, and granting things a new life has always appealed to me. I’ve got a bunch of wooden relics and artifacts in the basement and attic awaiting inspiration. I also have a bunch of junk in the attic. – well I wouldn’t call it junk, it’s too good to throw away, but I sure wouldn’t be heartbroken if it was lost in a fire or whatever. I had a few ideas for this contest, but...

My woodworing ideas and tips #9: My mind set and woodworking

129 days ago by Betsy | 7 comments »

Some say my mind is set—- in other words – I’m stubborn. So say they. I prefer to think I have a mind set. In other words – I think a certain way about certain things. Safety is one of those things that I have a mind set about and my mind is set on. I’ve been thinking about this today as I sit here, yet another day on the couch, unable to go to the shop and do what I would prefer to do. I’ve been thinking that maybe if I just do this little something ...

Small Painter's Cabinet #1: Initial Post

168 days ago by Stephen Fields | 4 comments »

I have had a request to make five additional small cabinets like I made for my first commission. I thought I would try and take progress photos as I go. I am truly a beginner so if you see things that I can do to improve the process, please let me know. Sadly, you may have to explain these improvements in detail, but lets cross that bridge when we get there. :) Here is a picture of one of the completed cabinets from the first set: Hopefully, the next five will also look like this. I...

All tore up.

183 days ago by marcb | 2 comments »

Between cutting 5000 feet of 1/4 round trim (tore up carpet in the house to get to the wood floors) and working on refinishing the dresser I now have my shop a bit tore up to get the newest toy in place. A 60 Gallon 5HP (ok its probably more like 3.2 you know how it goes) compressor. I need to get the wiring in place, then start plumbing, but it moved from the middle of where I should be parking my truck to the corner of the shop that i designated “its place”. Its used and a ...

Sandbar #3: Kitchen Cabinet Installation

201 days ago by Sparky977 | 4 comments »

Today was a big day! I finally installed the cabinets for my first full kitchen today! Rolly, our finisher, painted them at the end of last week. I am still waiting for the drawer guides to be delivered, along with the lazy susan hardware and the knobs, pulls, and shelf pegs. Also, the blue paint on the island is taking FOREVER to cure, so I haven’t taken those doors or the panels that will go on the sides to the jobsite yet. Oh, and I still have toe kicks and crown molding to go ...

On Banjos

211 days ago by Texasgaloot | 3 comments »

After putting my banjo project on display, I have received a number of comments running the gamut from complimenting the wood used to alluding to banjo player jokes. It seems as though there is a significant number of us that would like to build musical instruments, but are too intimidated or feel perhaps they are not musical enough to succeed. I really want to encourage you, if you are thinking about doing something like this, to give it a try. Go ahead and buy one of the many great ̶...

Some Harkening…

231 days ago by ericmakesthings | 7 comments »

I was reading from the Arrogant New Englander about his recent car trouble, and the subsequent way of venting his frustration. It reminded me of a time in my life when I really didn’t know where I was going, or how I would get there…till I actually arrived. Back in 1974 my parents bought a house that had many fruit trees on it. Most of which were avocado, but there were apple, plums, oranges, grapefruits, and I could go on. If my memory serves me correctly, there was very little sunlight t...

I'm a lumberjock, and I'm okay....shop progress

240 days ago by BarryW | 5 comments »

Oh, it’s nothing much…but after a long time just sitting there, I’ve used my 8 inch Grizzly jointer and 13 inch Dewalt thickness planer for the first time today…to create a base for my D4R Leigh Dovetail Jig. Which means I’ll be putting it together tonight. I had some thick pine in the garage for 2 – 3 years…1 1/2 or so 8” x 80”...it had bowed a bit…and I only needed a 6” x 37” x 3/4” piece according to the Lei...

Great work guys on all the projects you turned out. Just amazing work. Gary you deserved first place. Wonderful projects. That birdcage looked pretty tedious. Also Mr. Stewart your chair is a piece of art. Made for the little people no doubt. All the projects showed ceativety and excellence. Kudos to all. I’m in awe of many of the projects. So much talent in one place. What a gallery. I was surprised that some projects did’nt get many votes, and others got so many, thats what made...
