The polls are closed... can't wait for the results!

153 days ago by itsme_timd | 9 comments »

Well, the polls for the Summer Contests are officially closed now. Results are coming by tomorrow morning, I’m excited to see how it turns out. Some of the projects on here are unreal. They go well beyond a “woodworking project” to a true work of art, I could easily see some of these pieces landing in a museum. Always makes me want to improve my skills and learn new things. Good luck to all that entered and thanks Martin for another great contest!

Break Time Is Coming to an end...

193 days ago by RobH | 5 comments »

I have sat down three times this weekend to write this blog entry. Each time something has come up and instead of just leaving the window open I closed it down and went to take care of other things. I just got done mowing the yard and I am presently trying to cool down and re-hydrate. This should be a good time to get this done. At least nothing but maybe dinner will interrupt it. I went out in the shop the other night to get a screwdriver and I started feeling the urge to get some woo...

What wood to use on new bed project?

247 days ago by DrSawdust | 9 comments »

My wife has decided on a Greene and Greene style bed for the double bed in the guest bedroom. However, I would like to use a different type of wood that I haven’t used before. I have worked with Oak, Maple (hard and soft), Walnut, Cherry, Poplar, and of course Pine. I’m looking for some ideas of other types of wood that are not too dark in color and are moderately priced. If any of you have a suggestion I would appreciate it. Thanks,Dean

3 or 4 cords of maple....now, what to do with it?

275 days ago by pashley | 3 comments »

My friend George, heats his house with a wood stop. Being the resourceful type, he got some free wood from a local veneer plant. Bottom line, he has in his garage, something like 3 or 4 cords of wood – in the form of 3 food maple logs. Probably 4 inches in width. He asked me if I wanted some. Ok, guys, what would I do with that?!

Assembly Table #2: The Top is Done.

345 days ago by airfieldman | 7 comments »

Well, the top is done. I have to say, MDF is VERY heavy. I had heard that before, but didn’t really get it. But it’s done. I glued the MDF to the torsion box, and then attached the hardboard with 8 screws. Not sure I like them. But we’ll see. If not, I can replace the hard board for less than 10 bucks, so it really is a non-factor. That’s my dog, Reagan…best darn dog in the world! After I had routed the edges of the MDF/hardboard to match the frame, I had to trim it u...

Sawdust Is Our Friend!

380 days ago by airfieldman | 10 comments »

20 years ago, or so, I started something that I had no idea would be such a life changing event. I’m sure, in retrospect, I should have foreseen the power of this, but didn’t. 20 years ago, my wife (of about a year) announced we were pregnant. Now, being the young (VERY young) man that I was, I really didn’t see “US” as pregnant. However, being committed to the union I was in, I didn’t argue the semantics. What does this have to do with saw dust, o...
