Okay, I should probably preface this by stating that I started this bench about 2 months ago. I have been gathering lumber and vise hardware as economically as possible. So before anyone tries to duplicate this bench in a weekend they should seed out the lumber and acclimate it to their shop as well as purchase the vise hardware.
That said, you need a bench to build a bench. Sorry, I haven’t come up with a way around this yet. To date I have a fairly well equipped shop, yet I sti...

The Box arrived today Sat. Oct 18,2008.
It looks different from when I saw it last.
I removed some Ca Olive, TulipWood, Brazilian Cherry and Eucuaplus.
I added 6 Spalted Holly, 5 Spalted Maple and 18 Cherry Burl.
The reasion that I asked Tim for the number of people in this series is because i wanted to put in one pen blank for each person that is participating in Round #3.
I talked to Tim about this while Round 2 was still running. I had a cherry burl placed in my driveway and...

Well, the polls for the Summer Contests are officially closed now. Results are coming by tomorrow morning, I’m excited to see how it turns out.
Some of the projects on here are unreal. They go well beyond a “woodworking project” to a true work of art, I could easily see some of these pieces landing in a museum. Always makes me want to improve my skills and learn new things.
Good luck to all that entered and thanks Martin for another great contest!

I have sat down three times this weekend to write this blog entry. Each time something has come up and instead of just leaving the window open I closed it down and went to take care of other things. I just got done mowing the yard and I am presently trying to cool down and re-hydrate. This should be a good time to get this done. At least nothing but maybe dinner will interrupt it.
I went out in the shop the other night to get a screwdriver and I started feeling the urge to get some woo...

My wife has decided on a Greene and Greene style bed for the double bed in the guest bedroom. However, I would like to use a different type of wood that I haven’t used before. I have worked with Oak, Maple (hard and soft), Walnut, Cherry, Poplar, and of course Pine. I’m looking for some ideas of other types of wood that are not too dark in color and are moderately priced. If any of you have a suggestion I would appreciate it.
Thanks,Dean

My friend George, heats his house with a wood stop. Being the resourceful type, he got some free wood from a local veneer plant. Bottom line, he has in his garage, something like 3 or 4 cords of wood – in the form of 3 food maple logs. Probably 4 inches in width.
He asked me if I wanted some.
Ok, guys, what would I do with that?!

Well, the top is done. I have to say, MDF is VERY heavy. I had heard that before, but didn’t really get it. But it’s done. I glued the MDF to the torsion box, and then attached the hardboard with 8 screws. Not sure I like them. But we’ll see. If not, I can replace the hard board for less than 10 bucks, so it really is a non-factor.
That’s my dog, Reagan…best darn dog in the world!
After I had routed the edges of the MDF/hardboard to match the frame, I had to trim it u...
