During each trip to get groceries, my wife likes to buy 2-3 bags of Mountain Trail Mix at Walmart in the 1lb-12oz bags. She likes the taste of Almonds, Raisins, Cashews, Peanuts, and M&M’s all mixed together in one big mouthful. I, on the other hand, only like the M&M’s.
So, here is the argument:I like to dump out about a cupful of trail mix, and then sort out the M&M’s and put the rest back in the bag. The way I figure it, I am eating the parts I like, but...

“We were somewhere around Lagunitas, on the edge of the redwoods, when the screws began to take hold…”
(with props to Dennis Mitchell who suggested that my previous rocking horse entry was headed into “Fear and Loathing” territory…)
After evaluating and deciding to postpone assorted good suggestions involving dump valves and such, I finally got around to glue-up on the rocking horse, and slapped a first layer of finish on it yesterday. After all...

I spent all day yesterday cleaning the garage and working to get the shop in order. I took some pictures of the shop before I started and as requested some of the peacock that had taken up residence on my table saw. I also took some pictures of the handplanes I am going to restore. I’ll start another blog series about the planes. It may be a day or two before I post any pictures. The memory card reader on my PC is not working for some reason.
Anyway, my wife came out to “h...

Apart from reading just about every magazine that hit the newsstands since we bought our house several years back, I’m basically a self-taught woodworker. I’ve only taken two classes. One a 5-week lathe class (spindle turning), the other a ten-week intro class – where I designed and built my pub table. (The first project I posted here). I finished those classes a little over a year ago, and my wife and I agreed that I could continue to take classes as time and budget allowed. Consequently, I ...

Okay, I am kinda tired of just how cheap my cheap tools can really be. I have always had trouble with my $179 compound slide miter saw. I was never able to get it to make an exact 45° degree miter. I have always kind of assumed this was lack of talent or skill. I kept working hard to get it lined up exactly right and it always ended up just slightly off. Not a lot, but maybe 1/2°. It really hasn’t affected me since I have mostly done crown molding and chair rails with it. Coping ...

and so the rest of my day was filled with incidents that clearly reminded me that the Universe was smiling down upon me!
Oh yes, I am special. I am the one that was giving the Universe a laugh for the day. 1. the leftover Chinese food fell out of the fridge and splattered all over the floor (and me). 2. the BBQ sauce squirted out of the bottle and .. yup.. went all over me.3. the ribs caught on fire – and I mean caught on fire!!!! and well,, the charcoal crumbled as we pulled the ...

and so we went shopping today, and in the back of my mind was the Universe’s reminder to keep my feet on the ground and not get too caught up in my friends’ flattery… yah – you are no one special. Get back to reality.
So we went to Store A. Closed on Sundays (we were sure we’d been there before on a Sunday). No problem: Plan B… Closed on Sundays. Not a problem: Plan C…. didn’t carry it but if you go to Plan D they have them. Nice.Plan D: didn...

Okay I went to Ideal Saw Works on Saturday and picked up the new jointer. It’s a Jet JJ-6CSDX with the 56” long bed and quick setting knife head. I have to say, that cast iron bed is heavy. It was something like 165 lbs and I could barely pick it up! It took me about an hour to set it up. Most every one who has reviewed a Jet jointer has said theirs was ready to go out of the box, but I had a couple little issues. One of the blades must have shifted after it was set, because...

I’d rather spend my time in the shop, but there are days or nights when I could benefit from watching a good woodworking show or read a woodworking magazine. In fact, with the great decline in useful or entertaining programming on the tube, programs like, “This Old House, Hometime, etc. are the few left that make watching the tube worth while. The problem is that even these programs are getting scarce. What is going on? Even “DYI” is switching more to gardening tha...

This has been one of my best birthdays ever!! First of all it was as if it was 3 days long!! And I have received some great gifts and lots of well-wishes from family and friends! (Thank you LumberJock-ers for all your kind thoughts). Then last night we had family night and did a “video chat” with my son and his family. We had chinese food and played monopoly. That is so much fun. It’s just like they are sitting right here in our dining room. Anyway, this morning I discovere...
