So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. A very large walnut and walnut burl credenza (PIX)

This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out. Golden Mean, Golden ratio in constructing items.

The golden Mean or Golden Ratio is a number that people use when making items, buildings and furniture, They are determined a couple of different ways. The number is used to determine proportions between pieces of the item being constructed. One of the easiest to remember is to take 1 and 1 and then to add two consecutive numbers to get the next. Last week’s event in Chicago was fantastic. Being a novice, I really learned a lot from the many demonstrations and from getting to play with some fine tools. A couple of highlights for me were being able to try out Chris Schwarz’s ebony infill smoothing plane (by Wayne Anderson) and hearing Jeff Miller discuss the design and production of his beautiful Cantata chair. I’ve been wanting to add a few saws to the “toolbox.” And, rather than spend a bunch of dough, I thought that I’d try to refurbish some used backsaws. Jigs and Fixtures #2: Dowel Stock Preparator!

I’ve been fiddling with wooden hinges, and can’t get good dowel stock. Epecially dowel stock that matches the species of wood I’m working with. I gleaned this jig from another Rob Cosman video. I took a 2” piece of walnut from the scrap pile. I drilled a 1/4” (0.247” actually) hole in it close to one face. I took a few passes through the drum sander to just show the hole cut. In the beginning were the catalogs, and in the catalogs were beautiful workbenches, and attached to the workbenches were not-so-beautiful prices.
